Any good reason for SR over SR5? Or vice versa?

I want to apologize to @Sbpark. It was my bad I called you "butthurt"; However, I'd like to point out that I said it in a jokingly matter. I'd also like to point out that I wasn't mad or upset in any way until you kept on talking behind my back and calling me pissy.

I still stay true to what I said, that a TRD Sport will not help in any expedition. I'm sorry if I offended anyone with this statement.

I wasn't trying to shove any opinions down anyone's throat(@EatSleepTacos), I was just expressing mine.

Have a happy July 4th evening.

Putting a locker into an OR is a great idea. Best of both worlds

Off Road has a locker... on the back, and the 4WD Off Road has nearly the same traction as lockers on the front with A-TRAC/MTS.

Sr5. Throw some aggressive tires on it and call it a day. I have an sr5 and love it. Have had 0 issues with it so far. Has just enough but not over the top. My dad bought a TRDOR and wishes he has my truck every time he sees it. Save ur self 5 grand and get the sr5

The TRDOR does add more than just the offroad extras over the SR5. Many of these items are likely not of value to you with your potential build, but just to lay out the differences.

    - Assuming you are going with an Auto / Short Bed / Double with V6 4x4

    Bilstein Shocks
    Larger rear diff
Integrated Nav instead of AP connected Nav with larger 7" vs 6.1" screen
    Bed mounted 400w power outlet
Alloy wheels instead of Steels (Avail on SR5 appearance package)
    Qi wireless charger
    Leather trimmed shifter
    Smart key - keyless entry
    Push button start
Auto Dimming rear view with compass (Avail on SR5 appearance package)
32* vs 29* approach angle (due to lack of lower airdam)
    Ugly grill

    A SR5 Double/AT/4x4/SB with tow package is $32,970
    A TRDOR Double/AT/4x4/SB with tow is $35,640

So you save $2670 with the SR5. (naturally both trims can be optioned up much higher)

Good list of extra stuff that you get.

As counter arguments, for my purposes since I plan on building with aftermarket anyway:

Bilstein Shocks: Only applies prior to suspension swap
Wheels: Appearance package likely for me due to available colors, also...moot point if ever replaced with aftermarkets.
Qi Wireless Charger: Requires a Qi compatible phone.
Auto-Dim Rear View: see wheel reason.
32* vs 29* approach angle: Only applies until aftermarket bumper is put on.

Beyond what I listed I have no practical comparison, nor any real opinion on them.

IMO, it has everything to do with which model has the extras you will use the most and comes with the extras that you just want.

The SR5 made the most sense for me. To each their own.

I'm pretty sold on the SR5 at this point. Especially considering my intention to use aftermarket parts.

The last thing I'm pretty hung up on is the color. I've been a big fan of black Tacomas for a long time but I'm going to be moving to AZ, NM, or TX soon.
I hear that black shows every spec of dirt and can look pretty shitty.
Can anyone with a black Taco down in one of those dusty southern states weigh in?

The quicksand is by far my favorite after the black. I think it looks especially good when you have black armor and fender flairs.

I never owned a black Taco but I have owned a black truck in the past, it looks great when it`s all clean and waxed but it takes constant washing and waxing way more than many other colors to keep it looking that way.

Wouldn't recommend black. You can see every spec of dirt. And every single scratch. And black is usually the first to oxidize.

I was thinking that also, I haven't been to a dealer yet to test drive and see what the MID is all about,

Fog lights would be cool, there are a few extra apps in the audio unit also.
Pretty sure the seats are the same, you can get a decently priced colored fender flare option I believe with 16" AL wheels.

I wish Toyota would bring back the all weather floor for the Tacoma though, especially for just 50 bucks like it was in 2012.

No reason to fuel any other debates/ideas - it seems like everything is in place. Mine truck is silver and it's really nice not to worry about the dirt. Everything is fairly hidden and you don't need to wash it constantly. Not to mention that silver hides scratches pretty damn well. I originally was in favour of the Blue/Quicksand. The blue is still really nice to look at, but it has the same issues as black for dirt. Also, it heats up quickly and takes more effort/time to cool down (dark colors vs light with heat). The quicksand looks REALLY nice if you're on dirt/sand, but not flattering in the city IMO.

At the end of the day, color is really preference of the owner. My recommendation would be the silver, but who am I to tell you what to get. Best of luck!

I'm really wishing I'd have gone with the Barcelona red. Now whether or not that color is best for hiding scratches and dirt -- probably not. I believe White and Silver would be the way to go for those desired effects.

Reds always been my favorite. Even when it gets old it still gives off a classic 4x4 vibe

We went wheeling this weekend with an MGM truck. It was almost Quicksand by the end of the day. My Super White still looked white
