Don't get a 2nd gen, the 3.0 is the worst engine that Toyota has produced. I have taken excellent care of my sister's '95 and it is having so many problems at only 132k. My friend has a '96, 3rd gen, and it has over 200k with no problems and he is a lot harder on it. Just my opinion

I've had them both, 04 had alot more power and more comfortable ride, 98 was a bit more narrow and seamed to go through more (snow, icy roads ect.) Loved them both, if I had to make a choice I'de go with the TACOMA. Much better on gas, and I'm old now, dont need the big 4Runner any more

I have had both 2nd and 3rd gen 4runners. They are both great SUV's but the 3rd gen was hands down the best. Way more power from the 3.4L and it drove much nicer. The rear tailgate was a big improvement too. I loved my 1999 4runner. My only complaint was that the Fuel tank was too small. Only 60L! You had to fill it up all the time.

I'm looking into a 97 right now. Its got 152k, but in decent shape. Started right up still buried under a foot of snow and in single digit temps.

Im with Chris the 3.4 is a much better motor than the 3.0 unless of course you like wiping cams then go for the 3.0....

Update: I'm driving 2hrs tomorrow to look at a 92 4Runner. It's a SR5, V6, 4x4. Loaded, 116,500 miles (less than my truck had), head gasket replaced by Toyota (with reciept), no rust, and clean history. Wish me luck.
