I don't mind driving a manual or automatic and I have the choice between the two at my local dealer. I would like to make the right choice.

Flip a coin or pick the one you like, both are durable.

Assuming neither option truck has the e locker, the manual transmission will come with a beefier rear axle, so there's some strength there. Solely comparing transmissions though, they're both fine. They have both had minor issues in the past but as a whole, they're both fine options. I would put "strength" of transmission lower on the list of decision making priority.

If you are looking at an Off Road or Pro the rear diff is the same but gearing for the MT is 4.30 compared to 3.91 for the AT. If you are looking at a Sport then the MT has a larger diff compared to the AT and the same 4.30 to 3.91 gears

Any truck with an e locker has an 8.75" ring gear regardless of transmission.

Trucks without an e locker and an auto transmission have an 8" ring gear.

Trucks without an e locker and a manual transmission have an 8.75" ring gear.

I always love reading on the perceived shortcomings of people who cannot drive a stick and the resulting impacts. The simplest solution is to teach the other person to drive manual. Baffles me to hear people who say "I can't" or "I don't know how".

You can, you should learn how.

I had an ex girlfriend who couldn't figure out how to drive an automatic in "manual mode." Yes, she was really that dumb, and I'm sure she's not the only one.

To the OP, manual transmissions are generally stronger/more durable than automatic transmissions. Manual tranny in my heavily modded supercharged '04 Tacoma was still going strong at 250k miles when the engine let go...I highly doubt any auto tranny could handle the abuse that thing took for that long. After having a 2008 AT Tacoma for a few years I almost went back to an MT when I bought my 2019 but figured with the extra gear the AT would drive just fine...and it doesn't, and I definitely regret to getting the MT.

There are certain SO that fall into the category of "don't want to learn".

They refuse to even be taught.

Manuals are more fun to drive to a certain extent, you need to be paying attention so you know when to shift. Some people see driving more as a chore and want minimal effort.

I like manual transmission trucks but I hate the 5 foot bed. I had a DCSB truck and I hated it and Toyota doesn't make a manual DCLB.

    Choice was easy for me.

If you are planning on towing a lot, I would get automatic.

I drove a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 with a HEAVY dual plate clutch for years in the city. I don't think the Tacoma manual will be difficult to drive.

The manual transmission better addresses the wimpy power at low rpm that the 3.5 V6 delivers because with a M/T you can drive at higher rpm. However a $300 aftermarket ecu tune deals with this problem the best for either tranny.

Genuinely curious, how does 1 foot make all the difference for you?

The only time I can see it making a difference, if you are planning to camp in your canopy or you want tailgate up when transporting quad. Other than that, I don’t see any difference.

I had 6ft box before and now 5ft. I do everything with my 5ft box that I did with 6. No issues whatsoever.

This was on the weekend, did a side job for this lady. Had to do a dump run as well. I’ve got a bed rack and RTT, lady said I will not be able to fit everything, ha. It doesn’t look like much inside but it’s fully packed.

I use my box a lot and I’m always able to fit everything.

3rd gen is a piece of cake to drive in traffic. First is very low, helps a lot. Also, if you wanna make it even better traffic driving experience, get a 2WD low mod and you can crawl in 1st in 2low. Barely need to use your clutch that way.

It makes all the difference to me because my 183cm skis fit straight in the long box (186cms) and this impacts the placement of all other stuff I carry in the bed.
