I’m 6ft tall soooo laying down to sleep I fit much better in a 6ft bed then I do in a 5ft bed. And yes bigger is usually better.

    Oof.

Did you tow with a 3rd gen manual? 1st gear is actually pretty low, not the reverse though.

Engine and transmission are designed for a car? Hah. 3rd gen MT is rated to tow 6800#, show me a car that can tow that. 2GR FKS makes peak torque at 4600 rpm vs 4000 rpm in 1GR FE, 600 rpms makes no difference whatsoever. Don’t forget 3.5 has 40 more HP.

Also, 3.5 is used in a sienna that has more payload rating than any Tacoma ever made.

I will agree that any Tacoma is not the best tow vehicle, but I had absolutely no issues once I got going with stuff in my box and a 4.5k pound trailer. The engine barely felt it, cruised at around 2k rpms, plenty of torque.

The RC62F MT is only used in the 278hp/265ftlb Tacoma

The AC60F AT is also used in the 201hp/370ftlb Hilux

So maybe the AT is actually stronger since it's built to handle a lot more torque than the Tacoma can put out.

I disagree. Manuals at least give you some interaction in traffic. Love driving in LA in my MT M4. Not so much in my auto Tacoma. I guess is all depends on how good at driving a manual someone is.

The manual AC6/RC6X is rated for roughly 330 lb/ft. A little common sense with clutch and throttle use in 1st gear and it will probably handle quite a bit more.

"Still called the 1GD-FTV, this new engine now makes 150kW at 3400rpm and 500Nm (370lb/ft) at 1600-2800rpm when running through the automatic transmission. With a manual transmission, the torque output is capped at 420Nm (310lb/ft) at 1400-3400rpm"

Modifications are bad and only bad people modify.
Thank you for the info, that makes sense then. I could find the torque holding of all the other transmissions I've used from Getrag and Aisin, why is it so difficult to find come concrete numbers for our platform?

Not sure what either of them are actually rated for, but it'll obviously be beyond whatever the highest rated engine attached to them is. My Supercharged '04 Tacoma was somewhere in the 300hp/340ftlb range (dyno'd 235hp/253ftlb at the wheels before adding headers and more boost) and the 5spd MT outlasted the engine that gave up around 250k miles...not sure how long an AT would have lasted

Seems every manual with a power adder (super charger, turbo) fails the clutch. Haven’t heard of single auto problem.

100%. It’s not hard driving stick in LA traffic. Hell I can even shift with my left hand while holding a burger or burrito with my right hand. :D

That's a hell of a motor to last that long with a blower. That gen Tacoma used a W series transmission right? If so, I have some familiarity with those in an IS300. I appreciate you lernin' me reel good.

Stock clutch is the weak link, toasted mine in my 04 in about 35k miles. Replaced it with a Spec Stage 3+ which was overkill, rated to 500ftlbs I believe, and that one lasted about 150k miles. You can replace a lot of clutches at $500 a pop before you get into the cost of a new auto tranny

3.4 was definitely the beefiest they ever built. I drove the hell out of that thing. It still runs, kind of. Misfires so bad you can barely drive it...pretty sure the valves are burnt to hell, it doesnt burn an ounce of oil to this day so I'm assuming the rings are still good.

The 4 cyl AC60 is a 'light duty' model.
The 6 cyl AC60 is a 'heavy duty' model, with more friction plates in the clutch packs.

    Work in progress...
The clutch burns out or the auto trans torque converter locks up at some point. About 150K is to be expected, anyways it is a project day to fix it up and get back on the road. But for 150,000 miles it not not that big of a deal.

About 35 years ago I worked with a guy that broke his left leg and was on crutches and had a full cast. He had a lifted 70's Ford truck with a 460 and 4 speed MT, took him a bit of time to climb up in the cab but he managed to drive it every day.

My 1991 Dodge Cummins 5sp M/T has lots of miles pulling a 5th wheel trailer through the mountains and has carried around a truck camper for the past 10 years. At 167k miles the clutch shows no signs of wearing out. As I have stated previously, there are lots of people on TW who are going thru clutches cause they don't know how to drive one.

    100%.

I feel like falling asleep when I’m stuck in traffic in my Chevy express. In the taco, it’s all fun and games.

Those dodges are excellent towing rigs. Very heavy duty tranny and clutch.

When was looking for my taco, I considered a 2000s Cummins with a manual. The ones I saw were pretty beat up, there was one in good condition but the guy wanted crazy money for it. I drool when I see any Cummins with a manual.

I drove my buddy’s 91 Chevy pick up 454 with a manual and even though it was a beat up rust bucket, I had a blast driving that thing. I believe it’s around 400 tq at 1600 rpms.
