Some are easier to maintain than original. That's why I do the K&n drop in. Just saves me a trip to all the stores that are invariably out of the filter I need. I don't know as they're 200-500 dollars more easy..
I did have a couple of cars that, supposedly, with a tune, could actually build horsepower without opening the engine. But those were super high performance engines where getting 5 percent was 25 hp ya know, and the hp was equally pointless as getting another 4 out of your low performance engine.

EDIT: Read up on K&N... not worth destroying my engine for ease of maintenance. Went back to factory.

There is no requirement, no law , no standard on air filters
Air filters can be made with a 100 micron or a 10 micron filter media
generally a stock air filter is rated at 12 microns.
A high perfomance air filter simply works by allowing a higher micron opening with unrestricted air at a higher volume entering your engine, you will get the same results by just removing your air filter.
But! you are also allowing more dirt and much bigger dirt particals to enter your engine that in time will harm your engine, yes, the dirt particals will find their way to the oil and will be filtered out by the oil filter, but the dirt already did damage before it mixed with the oil.
A dirty air filter will even do a better job by allowing increased filtering.
Your engine is designed and tuned with the stock air intake system and I trust the Toyota Engineers more than I trust K&N.

currently using TRD air filter with the secondary removed.. was thinking of getting a CAI, but seeing that its pointless, prolly will save up for exhaust... not the question is, what exhaust?!?

I have the K/N cai and I think it has improved the efficiency of the engine. I read the sheet with it quoting 10 hp gain and all that , but the engine is nothing but a compressor so anything that allows that compressor to breath better in and out must help in my book. Any ways i got it on sale for $250 and its been on for 3.5 years and no problems. Just if it saves the cost of replacement filters from toyota or where ever is a savings as well as any fuel.

[IMG] I was thinking K&N but I don't want to have to clean the MAF and throttle body all the time and I believe that the oil would just gum up the works. also I WON'T remove my after filter like some do. That's a safety net for a reason. Stock is fine for me. Just MHO:D

Just doing a maintainance on my TrD air filter tonight. When I received it new in the package pre-oiled the filter media was yellow. When I washed it tonight it is pink and I'm using the K&N Filter Charger system to clean and re-oil. TrD offers a maintanance kit with the yellow oil but I have to believe this filter is made by K&N.

I used a K&N in my '07 and the guy who bought it from me is still using it and having great luck.

I am, and will be continueing to use a stock filter until I am well out of warranty coverage. Warranty claims are tough enough, without introducing doubt on their side.

    Stock in both cars.

Why? The stock filter has the BEST filtration out of any filters out there! How you achieve more power and more sound just by changing the air filter? Well of course by putting in less restrictive filter.

I want my cars to go 200+k miles and I don't need that 0.5whp or less I get from aftermarket filter. I'd rather sacrifice the 0.5whp while knowing that no big or harmful particles will enter my engines combustion chamber. This especially applies in dusty AZ. You will get that 0.5whp only when your engine is in open loop and really how many people drive trucks at WOT or above 75% throttle most of the time to notice that 0.5 whp?

if you want performance without sacrificing the health of your engine, get header or headers if you have v6!

I feel dumb asking this, but where do you guys buy the Toyota stock air filters? The stealership? How much do they cost?

I was going to run an AFE Pro Dry S but I've read too many horror stories about MAF sensors going bad and other problems because they just let too much crap through. Given that you basically gain nothing in terms of HP or MPG (that can be measured beyond standard margins of error) I don't see a point beyond running standard replacement filters. Plus with the dust kicked up on fire roads around here come the dry months, there's no way I'm going to risk damage by running a filter with larger pore size. Nor would I ever pull the secondary filter. An engine rebuild costs waaaay more than I could ever save by gaining a few MPGs.

Last I checked it was $20-30 at the dealership. Do you eBay? Get a K&N drop-in filter for around $50. Or the OEM one for around $20.

I use a K&N on my 2.7. It seems like it has a little more giddyup. I really just got it because you dont have to change it. EVER. However you do have to re-oil every 50k i think.
