I ran a comparison between the K&N and stock filter. The first time I ran them 1200 miles each. The second time it was 2000 miles. I drove the same trip to work and back and tried to drive the same. I used an UltraGuage. The K&n gave 1mpg better one time and .8mpg better the second.

I had an 86 4runner that good 485,000 miles on the engine without a single repair needed while using a K&n since new. I did a lot off of roading in the dust, so I figure it must have worked ok. I did go through 3 transmissions though.

I don't understand this. I don't know about your truck, by mine has a TRUE cold air intake from the factory. Why on earth would someone buy one of those tube systems and a pop filter? You're essentially turning it into a hot air intake.

I installed a K & N cold air intake (oil) on my 2012 and I notice a quicker response time when gassing it, but as for horsepower, not too much. I get about 4 mpg better now though. Sounds throatier too.

I decided to give the AFE Pro Dry S filter a try. I only have about 800 miles with it. So far, it is about .4MPG better than my K&N filter. I am going to stick with it.

MPG values are taken from my ultra guage on my daily commute with a mix of city and highway driving.

This just shows how unreliable if not impossible it is for someone with an ultragauge or scangauge to make positive conclusions with something like changing an air filter.

However there is a solid study that tested clean air filters and then extremely restricted air filters. It concluded that air intake restrictions have zero effect on mpg. Under most driving conditions the throttle is the overriding intake restriction, you'd need to be at near wide open throttle and approaching redline before the air filter could matter. Cruising down the highway at 2000-2500, doesn't even come close to maxing out the air filter.

Yes, .4 MPG more on my Ultragauge for over 800 miles of driving.

I have put another 350 miles on it. It is at .7 MPG better. There may be small fluctuations like your graph shows, but if you measure it over a long enough period the average out. That is why my shortest sample period was 1200 miles. The difference shows up most on the portion of my daily commute where I drive around 70 to 80 MPH.

My graph is not showing small fluctuations. You are looking at 22-26mpg variations with the use of the same fuel, same truck configuration, and the same driver.
The differences are from weather and how heavy traffic is going to and from work (45 miles each way every day).

i tried that in the past with my cars, and with a truck. I Always felt like the truck was slower, or like something was wrong.

Yup... Audio feedback is a HUGE part of our impression of performance, and it sells a LOT of intakes and exhaust systems even when the verified results on a dyno are too small to actually feel.

It’s the "ricer" effect. At least that’s what I call it. Its likethe Doppler effect, only non proportional J

If your familiar with science, the Doppler effect (how radar works) buteasiest to describe with a trains sound. The heard frequency is different proportionalto the traveling speed, whether it’s heading toward you or away from you.

If anyone ever wondered about radar, and or laser, They work on the Dopplerprincipal and determine the “speed” of the target by calculating the shift infreq that is returned to the “gun”

And radar detectors, they are only good if you are not the “target.” They work by warning you of the radio wavesthat are outside of the primary focused area, which is when you would have achance to slow down. If you are the target, per say.. then your screwed becauseyou can’t beat the computer, no matter how fast you are J. There are no radar “jamming”radar detectors, for your car. Sorry.

Laser works on the same principle but in a different method, there are laser“diffusers” out there, and they may or may not be effective. But laser iswicked effective, and dead accurate. That’s why the speed cameras etc use it.

Clocking, is just like it sounds. They time you from point A to point B andthe time it takes you tells your average speed over that distance.

I don’t know why I typed all of this but maybe someone is interested. Notreally here but other places on the big internet place people seem to have someserious misconceptions.

I spell checked this one for you all :)
