i am looking at running billies all the way around. it looks like the best price for the shocks is from DSM but i have to select the correct rear shock, either 5100 or 5125 depending on the amount of lift i do in the rear. i plan to do the 2in AAL from toytec, so it appears i would need the 5125. however, if i were purchasing the shocks from toytec it doesn't give the option for 5125 shocks.

While i have yall looking, will i need to do any other mods to lift 2-2.5 inches? I have heard mixed reviews on needing new UCAs (and dont really want to spend that kind of money right now) and extended brake lines. Any advice is appreciated - i have read tons of threads on this and cant quite bring it all together.

I ran a 2" AAL and 5100s without issues. Put on the lift, if you don't like the caster # buy new UCAs. You don't need extended brake lines with a 2.5" lift, I'm running almost 3" lift with stock brake lines.

I have a 2" block w/ 5100's in the rear they work perfectly. Also, if you go to 2.5" in the front I would imagine getting ready to spend $500 plus on UCA's. Each truck differs though. I have mine set at 1.75" in the front and don't need UCA's. Also as stated above no need for extended brake lines.

I emailed and asked... Their response is less than what I was hoping for.

The 5125 shock we list is longer but only offers a 90 day warranty from
date of purchase. It is our experience the standard 5100 is only
designed to work up to a max of 1.5" lift if the shock pulls apart
because it was too short for your 2" lift Bilstein will not warranty the
shock you would have to purchase a new one. It's your decision we try to
prove you with the best information possible so you can make an educated
    decision.

I guess my question is which is the safer choice?

You see pics of mine with a 2" in the rear w/ 5100's if you do serious offroading and pull the shock apart woooooo:eek: So if you know your going to be flexing your suspension at great lengths then buy the 5125 shocks if you wanna be safe. I have had no issues for the last year w/ my rear 2" w/ 5100's. You will be fine!!

If you think you will tear the shock up just put limit straps before the shock over extends.

Op, the standard 5100s can easily top out with 2" of lift.

Even with 1.5" rear lift they are a limiting factor offroad....I ran the extended langth 5100s when I had the tsb done, and a 1.5" aal....I gaine almost 2" of droop.

It all depends on your uses of the truck.

Imho the 5100s are not the proper shock for even a 1.5" lift due to the top out factor....even comparing the ride between the 2, the extended length 5100s were smoother....maybe it was just allowing more suspension cycling.....maybe it was due to the shock being in a "sweet spot" if that's a term.........the bumpstops will need to be altered tho.

I've spoken to other suspension builders and retailers......a few agree that the standard 5100 is working but its at its limits with even a small lift regardless of manufacturer claims.

Im looking at a full icon setup very soon.

Well said sir. Am I understanding correctly that the 5125 will have the same on road function as the 5100, but also have increased off road ability?

I gotta get back into work, so this is gunna be short.......

5125 ordered at the correct length should offer you more droop offroad, and avoid topping out....get good measurments and make sure ur bumstops will be effective.

U don't wanna do a 180 and have ur shocks now ending up bottoming out due to bumpstop issues.

The additional travel of my longer shocks did make things seem smoother because they had more travel to absord impacts I suppose.

Im not too suspension savvy....all I can do is give u examples, a hypothosis, and what I've been told by some suspension gurus I know.

    Gotta run.

It sounds to me like 5100's and 5125's will be the same on road and off road the 5100's are at risk for breaking while the 5125's will be safer. You could also buy limiting straps for the 5100's so they don't over extend.

People could give you better advice if you told them what you want to be able to do off road.

In my personal opinion, if you plan on off roading go straight to a mid travel set up. You can buy coilovers that will give you up to 2 inches of lift ( these ones do not need upgraded UCA's, as Fox and the dealership told me that independently ). You can also but coilovers that will give you 3 inches of lift but require new UCA's.

If you're just going to be driving on the street and want a lift, get 5100s.
