Hi! I’m new here, I have an 17 Tacoma SR5 and I’m debating on doing the bilstein 6112/5160 or 5100s all around. Just wanted to see hear any input on what’s best.

From what I’ve seen the choice is 5100’s all around with a 1.5” block in the rear or AAL depending on what you do. I myself am pulling the trigger on 5100’s all around and getting a 1.5” block for the rear to snuggle in 275/70/17 on my Sport!

Blocks! Agggh! :goingcrazy: Well, ok if you are not planning on towing, carrying a heavy load or putting a lot of torque on the rear axle. You are right about AAL, that will avoid axle wrap and unlike the blocks, it adds to your spring load capacity and helps keep them from bottoming out under heavy weight.

I did the adjustable 5100s all around and had them adjusted to level out the front end, happy with my decision

For those saying the 5100’s is this just because of cost or do you think the 5100’s are superior to the 5160/6112? Why or why not?

I don't think the 5100 are superior. They are a smaller shock but are cheaper and you can specify a different coil to attain higher lift especially if you are adding significant weight to the front. I have the 6112/5160 setup on 4/5 settings in the front with Dakar Medium leafs and settled around 1.5 inches of lift. This is with a ARE Overland campershell, some tools/gear, bedmat etc. Keep in mind, in these pics, there is a lot of camping gear, + 165 lb CVT tent.

    Welcome

What will you be using the truck mostly for easy-going fire roads or will you be expecting to put a bunch of weight on it and so on??

I’ll be going with the 6112/5160 set at 6/5 with Medium duty Dakars in the rear. I will also have a Leer campershell. Wont be carrying anything in the back unless I am out camping. Where were the pictures taken? Looks awesome!

You should get around 2inches at that setting. Truck rides great both empty and loaded. First pic is in Utah - Valley of the Gods. 2nd pic is neary Goblin Valley in Utah.

I have 6112’s and 5160’s. Also a AAL in the rear. I’m very happy with them, they’ve handled very well off and on road. I’ve also carried stuff in the bed with no issue.

I can’t speak of the 5100’s. But if I could go back and redo it between the two I’d stick with the 6112’s. It’s a few extra hundred dollars but it’s worth it in my mind. IMO.

I read the Medium Duty Dakars provides 2” of lift in the rear. With it sitting higher in the rear from the factory and adding the Leer camper, I think it should even out both front and back with the 6112s set at notch 6/5 (2”).

+1 on 6112/5160. Front and rear ride great. Choosing shocks really depends on your uses for them, but both sets are quality stuff.

I will mainly be driving it on road, with an occasional off road experience, but not much off road. Just would like the capability of when I'll need it.

I went with the 5100 no lift, factory setting. On road, the only off road I plan on doing is mild, fire road type. I went 5100 for price. I thought the ones above the 5100 would be overkill for want I wanted to do
