The title says it all, yet another exhaust question.

After 18 years my stock exhaust has finally began to leak. I am going to be replacing it with a Borla. My question for everyone is which muffler should I get? I like it mellow and limited to no drone. I have listened to their touring cat back systems through headphones and like the sound but I don’t know what muffler that is. I don’t wanna go any louder than what they use on their touring cat back system and would even consider going to a larger muffler to drop the drone even further

Also should I replace the muffler only or do a cat back? The stock pipes are still in good shape.

I will be using a local muffler shop that I trust to do the welding.

I spoke with Borla and the cat back touring is item number 14945. However they do not sell that muffler by itself. The closest thing they have to it is item 40664 which is a 19 inch center in. They said that is a little louder than the touring cat back. I found a clip online and it does seem to have more growl than the cat back touring. Do any of you have experience with the 40664 and If so, how is the drone?

The answer is: Corsa. If you are going for sound Borla sucks at it. It is capable of making an 8 cylinder pushrod GM LSx engine sound like an OE Honda 4 cylinder Civic.

If you are going for drone deletion and near silence then Borla excels at that.

Sorry if this wasn't helpful. Just wanted to give you a heads up on what to expect.

Dynomax superturbo is probably the best option. There was somewhere on here a while back that reported dyno gains with it. Also not much louder than stock with a little deeper tone and 0 drone on highway.

Appreciate the feedback. This is my daily so Limiting drone trumps sound for me. Corsa is not in the budget and if it was I would probably just buy a stock replacement from Toyota. Everything I read about walker and others that are meant to sound similar to stock is that they don’t last more than 3 to 4 years. Obviously not speaking from Personal experience on that

Ive had my superturbo for a little over a year and so far so good. The name makes it sound fancy but its really cheap and just a standard muffler. Gives it a little deeper tone through out the rpm range but is much more noticeably deeper than stock in the low rpms. Id say its an in between of stock and magnaflow considering ive had both.

I wanted a borla, found a 3rd gen trd pro take off, sounded deep and mellow but droned dumped under the cab and case size and configuration was not ideal. Put on a Super turbo 17747 long case and dumped it under the bed. Initially it was quiet then got louder and droned even more. Felt more mid to top gains with the super turbo. Enter Bosal factory replacement I have it dumped after the axle pointed down. That’s the best so far. Quiet at idle and at speed with no drone. More overall power gain and has a nice grow under acceleration. It doesn’t sound like the trd cat back that was offered (best aftermarket imho) nor does it sound as good as a stock T100 but it’s real damn close.

Not trying to thread jack haha, but Speaking of exhaust the other day I was looking through the little zipper book that comes with the truck, just took a break while trying to figure out some electrical wiring. I noticed that one of the little warranty books mentioned that exhaust/muffler have a lifetime warranty, including labor. I haven’t read into it much but wondered if anyone else had some knowledge on this. I would highly doubt they actually would replace it for free. But tomorrow I will take a picture of the booklet.
    Sorry, proceed lol

The noise you hear from the muffler will be greatly affected by where the tip is exiting, anything short of the stock exit behind the rear tire will be noisier in the cab than stock. Even adding a turndown tip if it exits under the box will improve sound inside the cab.

Funny you should mention that, I Literally just got off the phone with the exhaust shop and asked them if adding a tip with baffle, or a turn down would help mitigate cabin noise and they claimed it makes zero difference. Note, that is opposite of everything I’ve read on the world wide interwebz.

The reason I asked Is that I am trying to decide if I want existing tail pipe since it’s still in good shape, or have a new pipe added with either turn down or a tip designed to mellow out the sound even more.

I had my exhaust end at the muffler, no tailpipe or tip. It was very loud. I added a turndown only directly off the muffler, made it much quieter.
I had a 59 Chev El Camino with duals exiting under the rear bumper, it had only a resonator on each side, no mufflers. I changed the exhaust to exit in front of the back tires, with mufflers. It was way louder in the cab with the mufflers and tailpipe out the side, basically in your left ear. But my neighbors noticed how much quieter the car was with mufflers. So your muffler shop may be correct about what they hear but it is what the driver hears that was more important to me.

Take your tailpipe off now and go for a drive and see what you think.

I had the 19 inch Borla Pro XS put on this morning. Used the stock tail pipe and did not put a resonator on and it sounds great. Barely louder than stock but a little deeper tone.
Didn’t hear any drone regardless of the RPM or speed all the way up to 85 mph.
Seems to have done exactly what I was hoping for.

Curious how you measured the power gain? Currently have an mbrp 3in chopped over the back axle and am tired of the sound with no performance improvement so I'm looking at other options. TIA

All I can say here is that if you don't want drone, don't cut the muffler off and let the exhaust dump right under the back seats.. should be obvious, just wanted to put that there
My dad's tundra has a Flowmaster Super 40 on and it gave it a good rumble but doesn't drone at all, very nice muffler, and cheap as well.

Exactly correct, if you add a pipe to have the exhaust exit in the stock location, the drone will disappear or be greatly reduced.
