So I'm pretty sure that my next paycheck is going to result in a new tube bumper for my truck, since they are cheaper and lighter than plate bumpers. But I'm pretty stuck between trailgear and allpro so I thought I'd ask people who might have or have had them for their opinions. Didn't come up with any other threads to compare the two so I figured I'd start one.

Trailgear Low Profile. I would be getting the optional lightbar as well to protect the grill a little more...And btw sorry for stealing you picture Box, It just popped up on google so I thought I'd use it:D

AllPro I'm leaning slightly toward allpro at the moment because I really dig the headlight hoops. I would be getting those too along with filler plates for added protection.

Let me know what you think! also another note. I'm not sure if there is any real difference in the mounting brackets, but I have a 2" body lift and will be mounting onto the bumper brackets that came with the kit or modifying the bumper itself to fit. If there's anything about either bumper that would hinder me from doing so (I can't really think of anything) please do tell!

There both good/solid bumpers. The allpro is nice cuz it gives you the headlight protection. But other than that I'd say go with the cheaper one

All pro. I just bought and installed mine 2 weeks ago. I went without the headlight hoops and filler plates. I really like the look of the AP bumper, and the quality is top notch.

Obviously you know my choice. I'll point out a couple things. The All Pro bumper will require you to use their skidplates or do custom ones. Other aftermarket skids will not fit with their bumper. Not the case with Trail Gear. You can use your stock skids or most other aftermarket ones without issue.

Sine you have a 2" BL both bumpers are going to be a bit more complex to mount. The brackets that came with your BL kit will not be adequate mounting for the bumper. If you are getting a new bumper purely for looks then they might be ok, but if you plan on actually wheeling your truck with the new bumper, the BL brackets will fail quickly if you hit the bumper very hard offroad. The issue will be even more severe if you plan on winching. Those brackets are not up to the task. You are better off just adding some fill plates to cover the gap left from the BL and not modifying the bumper regardless of the one you choose. The modification needed to get those bumpers to work correctly and keep the same level of strength to an un-modified one will be extensive enough that you might as well have a fully custom bumper built.

I MUCH prefer the crossmember that comes with the TG bumper over the mounting of the AP bumper. The TG bumper adds a lot more strength to the front of the truck with the addition of the full crossmember that the bumper is mounted to and the TG bumper has more bolts holding the bumper/crossmember to the truck making it stronger again.

If you like the headlight hoops on the AP bumper, you could always have someone bend you some hoops to work with the TG bumper.

I had the same debate when I was choosing a bumper and I chose the TG one and have been very pleased with it. It's taken a beating and held up great. I prefer the looks of the TG one. And I like the extra recovery point on the TG one with the front receiver that isn't part of the AP bumper. IMO the TG bumper is just a better bumper.

Just to share a pic from another angle of the TG bumper. Took some abuse recently in Moab with no complaints.

Trail Gear for sure. The AP front bumper adds extra protection to the sides where less protection is needed and takes from the middle of the bumper where it is needed more imo. I'm talking about the how exposed the lower part of the radiator will be without a winch and still less protection with a winch. The winch plate doesn't seem designed as well and probably won't hold up to a lot of winch compared to the TG front bumper.

I think the AP bumper looks good but I really like the looks of the Trail Gear bumper that has a good mix of looks and protection. More choices of skids is also a good point of the TG bumper.

Shit...Not what I wanted to hear haha. Just making my decision harder!!! I was hoping I would be able to mount it on the brackets as a temporary measure, as anything is bound to be stronger than my stock setup. Box, I will admit I will probably NEVER wheel as hard as you do, and my front suspension could never handle a winch anyway without an upgrade.

I'd go All Pro again, but with lighthoops and filler plates. Here's mine without the handles on it...

I would really like to try the new Apex bumper for the first gen to. Looks cleaner IMO

Donahoe CO's, Deaver leaf paks, Lockright Locker, All Pro body armor ( sliders, front and rear bumpers ), All Pro under belly skids, Warn M8K w/Masterpull synthetic line, Dual Optima battery system, 4 ea LightForce Striker 170 offroad lights, 8 ea wired rock lights, and plenty more I'm sure
The All-Pro bumper can not compensate for body lifts (bolt-up)...
Modification would require fab work and a welder. (be a PITA)

I have a 1" BL and just called it good enough...
But a taller BL would surely look silly.

    * 98-00 tacoma would require modification to the front frame horns.
those will need be shortened (and capped) removing near 3"

    * 95-97 and 01-04 do not require frame horn shortening to fit the AP bumper.

I don't think it matters how hard you're going to wheel it. This thing will need to protect you in case of an accident. The brackets for a BL will fail and the bumper will become utterly useless if you try to mount it using the BL brackets.

I've given you my reasons to choose the TG bumper over the AllPro. If the main reason you want the AP bumper is the light hoops, I noticed on their site yesterday that you can order those lighthoops seperately ($99 I think). So I bet you could make them work with the TG bumper with some slight modifications. That way you'd end up with a stonger bumper, better skidplate options and still get the light hoops you wanted.
