I have an Off-Road/Pro OEM skid that a TW member gave me for free when he upgraded. It’s plastic, which some people “feel” isn’t strong enough, but I don’t crawl, and it handles the occasionally baby head or belly scrape just fine; the tank is pretty burly too.

Im looking to buy a steel aftermarket gas tank skid soon. I took the truck out wheeling over the weekend and found that it’s quite exposed to the rocks.

RCI Aluminum here - no complaints so far. It's heavier-duty than the plastic Offroad skid and 3/16" thick - more than enough to protect against an unlucky drop onto a rock, etc. If your rig doesn't already have the plastic OEM skid, you'll need to pick up some inexpensive straps to attach the RCI skid plate.

Edit: they also have this in steel!

I went with the RCI skid package in steel. Mainly because I preferred the look of the front skid compared to other products out there. Made in the USA was another big reason I choose RCI.

When I started to consider the idea of skid protection a fuel tank skid was a top priority. Decided on steel vs aluminum because adding the weight wasn't as much of an issue and I figured the steel wouldn’t scar as easily.

I’m running the same skids too. Love them!

I was worried about the exposed bolts on the RCI Gas Tank skids. I went ahead and ordered the BAMF gas tank skid. Hope it’s as nice as RCI without the exposed bolts.

Another vote for the RCI skids. I went with aluminum all around as I dont really rock crawl as much as I do pretty low risk trails. It could definitely take a beating though. 1/4 aluminum is fairly strong stuff.

You can find a decent priced one over at Ricochet here, Butbuilt here, Mobtown here, or at RCI here. I went with the MORE off-road because I liked the main skid package from them. General list of skid manufactures over here.

Toyota cheesed out on this part not sure what they were thinking when it came to plastic. I could maybe see if it was some glass fiber reinforced stuff. I guess enough of the first gen ones rotted off they figured plastic was the way to go

Have we seen anyone actually shred one or suffer a puncture that a steel/aluminum aftermarket skid would have feasibly prevented?

Mine was $416 as they PC'd it for free (early model). Plus, LETSCRAWL will get you a 5% discount (MORE Off-Road)
