Glock is only continuing gen4 production for L.E. contracts. Which will probably be around for awhile. If you can get past the weird grip angle and the break on the trigger (many people can't) they are or have been in my experience very good. I like the trigger on my gen5 the best. It's more of a rolling break. If you look at the drop safety's you can see why. On gen4 and older the drop safety is a circle. But when the trigger bar goes over it, its a "sharper" break. On the gen5 its more rounded and the break is smoother. I'm not doing a good job of explaining it but if you look at it you'll see what I mean. I usually can shoot my 5th gen better and more consistently. Or not depending on the day I'm having.

That is why I love CZ's It's the Grip angle. The standard Glock's I have tried have me pointing it downward.

late model (3 letter prefix) g19 gen 2's prolly the best 9 ever built. why glock stopped production on this model is baffling... other than no light rail?. gen 3's are still glocks "perfection" but adding the finger groves on the grip became a problem for a lot of shooters... this gen coined the phase "glock finger." got 2 g19.3, on my ccw i undercut the trigger guard. now i can shoot couple hundred rds without getting the glock finger. by the time gen 4's got released, the market was flooded with poly guns equally as reliable and better shooters... VP9, P320, M&P, PPQ (aka glock killer) etc.
glock gen 5 went back to the straight grip for potential military sidearm contracts. g19.5 lost the XM17 MHS army contract to the SIG P320.
need some range time with the g19.5... and walthers new PDP.

If you must have a Glock go to a range that rents them and figure what works for you. Yes, you can learn to shoot them, but they're not intuitive for everyone, especially those who grew up shooting handguns with proper grip angles. The Polymer80 is the grip Glock should have made, then they wouldn't need five generations of "perfection".

I do not like Glocks, but the gen 3 with the finger nubs removed, the trigger guard undercut, the mag release relieved, the internals polished and the sights replaced is tolerable.

Before some Glock fanboy gets his panties in a twist, yes, they are excellent utilitarian tools, but they're not to everyone's taste.

I don’t believe I’ve ever fired a 19, I have experience with both the 1st and 4th gens of different models.

I added a grip with finger grooves to the 1st and didn’t need them for the 4th. I don’t understand why they eliminated them for the 5th.

Edit: Appalachia Man appears to have the explanation.

I have several CZs, a couple of Smiths, a Shadow Systems and now a Gen 5 19. I just unwrapped it this morning and between my middle daughter and me, we put about 50 rounds through it.
I really like how it shoots. I shoot my Shadow Systems and now this Glock, better than all of my other 9mms. I like the rolling break. It keeps me from trying to stage the trigger, then anticipating the break.
I've been anti-Glock most of my life, always refused to 'drink the cool aid'. I really like this gun. I got to handle a Gen 3 and a Gen 5 at the local gun shop before I ordered this one. I thought I'd like the finger grooves but they just didn't fit me. The Gen 5 is the ticket for me. I even like the stock sights...go figure.
I also finally put my Holosun red dot on my S&W Compact yesterday. The jury is still out on that. I like a red dot on a long gun but I think it's going to take a little getting used to on a handgun.

That's how I was for a long time too. Didn't care for my Gen3 Glock at all and sold it, but a few years later shot my buddy's G4 with a Zev trigger and I was sold. Now my G4 19 is hands-down my #1 gun in my whole collection. I'd love a G5 but the differences aren't enough for me to rush out to buy one yet, plus I'd have to add an RMR, light, trigger, sights, springs, mags, etc. and I don't feel like dropping another $1500 on a gun right now :p

Red dots on pistols is the future makes a world of difference at longer distances with a single focal plane.
Check out the grouping on this target minus the 2 jerkers done at 25 yards with a subcompact 43x. I can’t do that with irons.

I owned Gen 2, 3, 4, 5. Still have the Gen 5 and 3, and prefer them in that order.

gen 5 if you're going to keep the internals and slide stock, gen 3 if you want to modify it in big ways as a platform

I've used about every version of about every model Glock there is, except for weird ones like the 357 sig and GAP. LOTS of 19's and 17's. In all honesty, I can't tell what gen is in my hand when I'm using it. Here's what I can tell for sure:
1- if the trigger sucks (or doesn't)
2- if the sights suck (or don't)
3- if it is older or newer based on if it has a rail. Which doesn't matter unless I want to put a light on it.
