the lesser number mean less weight (lb) for each 1 hp. its weight per hp so the less the number the faster the truck is.

the 4L is faster I test drove one. as far as durability I don't know I haven't own one but my 3.4 works great all original except all belts & water pump kit, battery, tires and muffler at 240K KM. No alignment, electrical, suspension or engine leaks noise or any other issues.

The 4.0 could use a major power upgrade from the factory

It's already had a power upgrade for years, just not in the Tacoma. 4Runner owners have had the 270 HP 4.0L since 2010 model year and Tundra owners since 2011. SMH at Toyota. I really don't get it, but the Tacoma sells regardless.

That dual vvti 1GR is much weaker than the ones in the Tacoma. The new 1GR should be better though.

Ya there is no way 4.0 can beat 3.4 SC you gotta be a real bad driver to lose to that.

Its only on Paper, in actual it depends on driver's reflect and skill but weight to power ratio is not that much different half a sec 0-60. the 2nd gen has a little advantage stock to stock half a sec.

Yea just saw. My partner's 4.0 has got more power than my 3.4. My unit has 288k on clock and 305s and that 2nd gen w 265s and 80k won't and can't hang. He plays it off well, but it's gotta suck when a '98 cuts cookies around your '11 in a hole while you're stuck in 4LO. 2WDs lifted are the funniest, and my ol lady says "cute."

Got the answer to that one.... TRD Supercharged 3.4 definitely gets over on the bigger 4.0 motor.
