now that post makes sence... its all about what you wanna do..not enough power can be a hinderance. most of which can be made up with deeper R@P gears which stop at a certain point. then you can swap in 4.1 t case gears or doublers etc. unless you do hardcore mudbogs the 4 banger is fine.. its nice to have extra power of a v6 when you need it. but CAN be a bad thing too.... wheel base plays a major part. just because said vehicle is more compact.... it CANT do what a longer wheelbase CAN on certain objects. and vise versa. BUT I THINK IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO WAXED PAINT>>SOME WAX PROVIDES BETTER LUBRICATION FOR THE ROCKS.

just like everyone else has already stated, it depends on what you're wanting to do.
In my experience, i bought my truck for an every day driver and doing hauling on the weekends (whether it's a boat or 600 lbs of xyz). So for me, my TRD DC LB sport does more than i need it to do. if i want to go off the pavement, i MIGHT take my truck, but if it's anything crazy, i've got my 4x4 wrangler with 35's on it that will pretty much take me anywhere i want to go.. trees in the way or not ;)

We're getting lost with the power vs. Gear debate. The op is interested in the Tacoma V6 or 4 cylinder for wheeling purposes. I see he's from Houston, I'll assume he is in sand and mud most often. The 6 would be the way to go. But again for a stock truck rock crawling the 6 would do just as well as the 4. I'm referring stock to stock. When he lifts it then the 6 will still have the upper hand. I know the gears are different but there are tons of us here that crawl our v6 4door trucks, my 3.73's with 33s have done just fine at the Hot Springs ORV park (crawling, Torque) as well as hitting some muddy ass trails here in Louisiana(Momentum, HP). The 6 will be larger trucks (length) but look at all those that wheel them. Not dogging the 4's but answering the question.

For those that say mudding isn't true offroading....I offer you to come out here to the swamp, go hunting, using your truck just to get to the camp.

Look, in mud and sand, the 6 is better. All else being equal.
So I guess....since there is no disadvantage to the V6, and sand and mud is part of "off roading" how do we get all the jealous 4 cylinder owners to agree....:)

Meh, I can't see a clear advantage either way here. They're both good engines (although some of us will only buy in a manual, and the 6-speed trans sucks... I'm looking at you TOYOTA!). I do see the argument regarding mud.

It seems like you should just pick whichever you want, and they'll both be fine. If you get the 4 and need more power, regear.

I picked the 4-banger because I don't tow, wanted a reliable manual transmission, and wanted the mpg savings. I haven't regretted it. I can also understand why people opt for the v6.

To the auto trans people: gearing is more than just going slow, it's the fact that by going slow you're applying lots of power. You can get the "infinite gearing" effect you think you have in a torque converter via having the clutch halfway in on a manual - but that isn't the point. 4.10, 4.56, or more ridiculous gearing will give you more power (and fewer turns of your wheels) per engine rotation, allowing you to better muscle up inclines, etc. How slow you go is just a fun measure of how low your gearing is.

Gears don't give more power, they merely make it available at different speeds.

OK, if you find yourself unable to accelerate sufficiently, and would like to get more power output at slower speeds to get a better start or handle larger tires at the expense of gas mileage after purchasing your 4 cylinder, regear.

I'm aware you don't get a green +100HP mushroom when you regear, and if you take it too far, good luck hitting highway speeds, but I figured you could figure what I meant and save me from being even more verbose. Guess not.
