As some of you may know I'm going back to college in August and I'm looking to get a new laptop sometime in August or first of September. I have a Dell now, had a Gateway at one time and a Dell desktop. I like the Dell better, but I've heard Toshiba is better than Dell now.

What is your thoughts on the best brand I should look at or does it really matter now? I know it changes all the time so I wanted some ideas.

MacBook Pro gets my vote. Yes they are expensive but they will outlast almost anything.

ASUS make a really good laptop. People tend to feel like they need to shell out a lot of $ to get a "good" laptop. If it's basic study, browsing the web, word processing you can get a fine laptop in the $500 range.

That's my thing they last awhile, but I don't think they last as good as they should. I have taken mine with me alot and when I had my Gateway it started tearing up I mean really the screen was attached by a wire/thread piece.. Seriously.. I thought they were made to take with you.

I purchased everything from laptops, misc PC parts for building rigs and they'll never let me down. It's an alternative at the worst.

Another vote for a Macbook Pro... If you need to run any windoze based programs, you can always use VMWare or Boot Camp.

I take alot of pictures on my DSLR so it needs alot of hard drive space and RAM is my main concern.

    Apple Mac Book Pro.
NO issues at all. Trouble free computing, can't ask for more.
I've owned a Mac for the last ten years after having each phase of PC since the Tandy Trash 80 and since I went over to a Mac I wouldn't own another PC.

I've owned an HP, and currently have a Lenovo. Both work reasonably well.

EXCEPT.....both of them have had really strange habits of disconnecting different bits of hardware.

On my HP - my CD drive pretty much disappeared. This happened approx 2 years after I bought it. If I go to My computer it only shows my C: Drive. Real pain in the ass. Also the webcam quit working VERY shortly after I bought it.

On my Lenovo (not even a year old yet), it has a real neat little finger reader, I use it for logging into windows....last week - its gone. Device not hooked up it says. Also my USB ports are wonky. I have 3 of them but half the time it wont recognize my phone, sometimes switching ports works.
Also, my webcam just quit on it.

Both laptops see incredibly tame use. They are pretty much couch laptops, no hard use, no bumps, etc. Not sure if its driver issues or some kind of virus but my gosh does it piss me off.

On the link I sent you, you can search laptops by hard drive space. Scroll down to HDD space bottom left. You can also click on "advanced" under Narrow Results to search by RAM as well.
