like the title says, which size magnaflow muffler will sound best on a 4.0 v6? or i guess i should clarify that i am wanting a more aggressive, lower rumble/growl i guess; NOT the raspy/angry bumble bee/weed-eater/dirtbike/honda civic with 12" tip type sound. lol.

i have already chosen magnaflow, but anybody with a better understanding of exhausts in general will hopefully be able to tell me what size will give me that sound on a v6 4.0. the 14", 18", or 22"? i do realize that the longer it is, the louder it is. the loudness is not a problem, i just want to avoid the ricey sound and didn't know if the different sizes would sound different on a 4.0 vs 2.7. because the only vids i could find with specific magnaflow mufflers were of 2.7's. the 14'' sounded ok, but i don't want it to sound rice on a 4.0.

and before i am slammed by people telling me to look through thread, i have for the past couple of hours. i have also searched, and used the google site specific search for tacomaworld and still never found a solid answer. and for anyone that will say for me to go to youtube and decide for myself, i have been watching all the video and sound clips on threads and youtube. it's hard to tell one from another when the camera is sat down right at the exhaust tip and it's blaring while the guy revs in his driveway; they all end up sounding ricey with the camera that close. very few drive-by and take off clips were found, but they had the best quality. from the little i could tell from the clips, the 22" sounds barely above stock, the 18" is a little better, and the 14" following stronger as well. i just don't wanna pick the 14" and it sound ricer in person. so any tips are greatly appreciated.

I have the 14 inch magnaflow welded in place of the stock muffler and I think it sounds great. It doesn't sound anything like a rice burner or anything cheap. The shorter the body the louder the sound.

so you have just the 14" muffler itself and new tips? do you recall which model number or know a few more details about it so i can look up on it? and it's just a louder, more bold, aggressive, rumble?

Are you going to get headers in the future? If not get the 18". The 18" is what comes with the catback system. I just swapped out my 18" for the 22" because I was very tired of the loudness and drone inside the cab. It did sound good, but just got annoying. The 22" is so much better has a nice deep tone, very quiet inside, and no rasp.

I've got an 18", and haven't had any drone in the cab since I dumped it after the axle. (I had a drone with the full catback on).

ok, so it seems like everyone agrees that magnaflow does not have a ricey honda civic sound. now i am leaning towards the 14'' to be honest, but i don't want it ridiculously loud. will the 14'' be so loud that it's annoying neighbors, waking people up, making everyone stare at me? lol, keep in mind that i am just getting the muffler welded in, not a full exhaust or cat back, whatever it is called. will a full exhaust with a 14'' be louder than just the 14'' muffler? and i also lean towards the 14'' because i am not sure if the 18'' or 22'' are loud enough. i know it's hard to describe a sound with words, but i want enough for my truck to be heard coming and going, but not crazy loud, to be heard while idling, and when i take off from a stop. i'm just looking for the deeper, more aggressive sound.

the magnaflow catback system comes with a 18" i believe. I don't think it'll be too loud unless you put on some headers in the future.

the 14 wont be that loud trust me it wont wake up your neighbours it only really screams if your hard on the throttle and im sure you dont leave your driveway every morning full pin, today i spent the day actually gutting a bit of my magnaflow, not completely, just a little bit, im so happy with the sound right now and i do like it loud, trust me though it wont be to loud if you just weld in a 14 and leave it like that

i went with the 18 " and added a resonator to take the edge off of it

mine actually sounds like a 6 cylinder sports car

and i have yet to hear a complaint from my wife
    and she has superwoman hearing

the part number for a 5x8x18 is 12256

this is the muffler suggestion from Magnaflo
when i e-mailed them asking about a muffler that would provide the sound i wanted

not ricey - no drone - and a good sound with a growl

this is the one they use on catbacks

    have fun

that's the same one i just got. i still honestly don't know what it sounds like other than in the cab. your camera is too close to the muffler, it just all muffles together and so do all the other videos. or maybe it's that my speakers suck, idk. i would like to hear a drive by. i guess i need to get someone to drive my truck up and down the road so i can hear it for myself. i still don't know what the startup, takeoff, and driveby sound like. i know they all sounds good inside the truck though.

thanks for the help, feedback, and suggestions guys. i got a magnaflow 12226 muffler and a black tip. it's a 14''x5''x8'' oval muffler. it's also stainless steel with a center/offset position at 2.5''/2.5''. i think that it sounds pretty good. however, i've only heard it from in the cab. i need to get someone to crank it for me, take off, and drive by so i can get the full effect. it doesn't sound ricer at all. it is definitely not too loud, but it's not quiet either. the best part is the lifetime warranty. keep that in mind if you are considering mufflers.
