I was looking through the maintenance guide for my 2012 long bed four door 4X4. There was reference to lubing the double cardan u-joint. When under the truck I didn't see one. Mine has a two piece driveline with a carrier bearing. Which models would have the double cardan u-joint?
Also, does the carrier bearing need greasing too? I didn't see a zerk on it.

Not sure about the Tacos, but lots of the Toyota 4x4s run a cv on the front drive shaft at the T-case end.

If your Tacoma has this, then you have it on your truck. This is what a double Cardon joint looks like.

That's because the ones that wrote the book thought it was suppose to have a DC joint... like I and so many who live with vibes... Those assholes at Toyota, what were they thinking when they decided to ditch the DC joint... No Double C. on 05+ Tacoma 4x4 or not, it's a typo or they didn't re-write from the 1st gen Tacoma that had it.

    Carrier bearing is non-serviceable

Also, the front driveline u-joints have no zerks. What's with that? It spins just as much as the rear.

Sure they do. They are in the cross, not on one cap like the rear u-joints.

Thanks. I'll look again. Are they the regular zerks or are they the inverted type than need a needle?

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Thats what happens when you cut and paste from 4runner booklet. :D
Lucky I kept my 4runner driveshaft despite wife complains and it looks like its goign to be a perfect fit.
Maybe next summer I will try installing it. Not that I have vibes but I think truck will get much smoother with DC.

Regular - mine are 45 degree zerks. If you can adjust the direction they point out from the u-joint with an open-end wrench, you can usually get a standard grease gun tip to pop on & pump grease without it oozing out everywhere.

    Thanks, I found them.
One thing I noticed too was the front driveline can be rotated without rolling the car. I'm curious how the front differential is disengaged like that without manual locking hubs. I also have an early Bronco and the transfer case and hubs operate much differently.

Front driveshaft only spins when four wheel drive is engaged.

Thanks for the help everyone. I got it greased. I've been using the services that were provided by Toyota for first two years after purchase. This is the first service I've done myself on it. Oil service was straight forward, but I missed the driveline needing service every 5K miles too. It was so clean that I doubt Toyota had been greasing the driveline at all.
Also, while reviewing the maintenance schedule, I was surprised to see the requirement at 30K miles for a spark plug change.

    Thanks.
That's good news. I won't need to grease it as often as the rear.

You need to engage four wheel drive for at least 10 miles a month to keep everything moving and properly lubed down there in front of the transfer case.

Buy your spark plugs at the dealer parts counter, they are the best for the truck and fairly cheap.

My opinion, as well as the majority here is that the two wear items that should be bought at the dealer are; spark plugs and oil filters (they are simply the best on the market)

That's because it's a Ford. They're designed to break early in life so you'll be forced to buy parts/service.... thus keeping some of the American economy flowing. :D

Well, the Bronco is my main ride. However I do use the Taco to pick up parts for it.;)
