I've ran nothing but premium in my rigs since I've had my 07 FJ. Anything other then premium in my FJ I got SHITTY mileage. So I figured I'd run premium in my 2010 Tacoma and the same in my 16'.

I'm really not sure why people are running anything other than just regular as long as it's from a top tier manufacturer. It's a complete waste of money

Just make sure you dry all the water out before you run it. I would add sugar, but I hear flour works well also.

Seconded. This is how I’ve always understood it. If your engine isn’t high enough compression to require 93 octane, then not only will it not give you any real benefit, but also since 93 octane isn’t as volatile and your engine isn’t producing the compression required to expend the higher octane fuel, you’ll be left with unburnt fuel in the cylinder and potentially even contributing to carbon buildup in the cylinder. If your manual specs 87 octane, that’s what’s best for your engine. If your manual specs 93, then you really do need 93.

On a side note, diesel is waaaaay higher octane than 93. I forget the actual rating. But maybe one of the “higher octane always = better” folks should try than in their taco. Though I wouldn’t mind a taco engine that was designed to run on diesel. *Hint Hint Toyota*

I use 87 octane ethanol free shell gas. Runs smoother and little better mpg.

I use 87 octane. I would run 85 if we had that option here. I'm at about 3600ft.

I run 'midgrade' 87/88 (standard is 85 here), sometimes throw a tank of ethanol free 88 in there. I've never seen a benefit of putting 91 premium in. Also, my altitude is 5000, dealer even told me I would be fine with 85 but I haven't put any of that in yet.

I would love to find Ethanol Free, last time I checked closest station was about 100 miles.

My truck has always run better on premium than regular. Less vibrations, no stutters, etc., that were always present on the stock tune with 87 octane. When I ran 93 octane the fuel pump ran quieter, engine was smoother, all around better performance. The old sayings that continue to be prevalent about premium being a waste of money may very well be true on many vehicles but modern, sophisticated ECUs do compensate for the higher octane more than folks think. I've even had a field service tech for Toyota confirm that - his words "all of our current vehicles except the Prius will run better on premium, its just up to the driver to determine whether it runs better enough to warrant the extra cost, but they will run fine on regular"

Now, running 93 on a truck tuned for the ignition advance to compensate for the higher octane = one very happy Taco owner!

87 and I also ran 87 in my 2011 5.0 GT mustang and if you ran 93 octane then the HP went from 402 to 412..couldn't tell the difference but that was in a muscle car..

I try to get the high end shell when out of town (none in the RGV) or the higher end from Exxon. The stuff that Valero sells aint as good. I havent noticed with my truck, but with my moms Range rover it takes almost a full tank from the Valero by my house to my sisters house in SA. If I fill up at the Shell by my sisters house I get back home with 3/4 maybe a little more in the tank. Just my observation.

So tacoma 2020 manual says 87 and up, most likely both engine cylinders designed to burn fuel with octane combustion resistance between 87-93 equally, probably doesn’t build up carbon more with 93 than 87.

Using 88 octane since there’s no 87 in Albuquerque.
