I think it was in the dealer service manual. That's how they set up my rig, 5k oil change sticker on windshield and 5k service set up in the auto reminders. Bought the rig 400 miles away and they informed my local dealer to contact me at 5k for the free oil change and service, which they did.

what tyfoon11 said! I am mad at the dealership but i am not crazy! i bought a 2016 tacoma because i had a 99 taco for 5 years put a 100k miles on it droped it in many ditches climbed levee's bumped many trees never slowed down for a pothole drove 70 mph on gravel road and never seen the shop once! i probably need to take her in for maintenance check at some point soon just to tighten some screws and bolts.

Only kidding. I know I'll never own another Chevy truck.

Yeah my dealership said bring my truck in after 6 months so they can check to see if the nuts/bolts are still tight. I'm for sure going to remind them to re torque the U-bolts on the rear.

It pretty simple here guys. Toyota care will provide maintenance as outlined in the book. According to the page from the book posted by markc1024, that's every 10k.. Any 'dealer promises' such as free first oil change at 5k had better be in writing because I'm not seeing it in the book.

I change my full synthetic oil in both my 2008 Tacoma and my 2014 Volvo S60 every 5k. Overkill for sure but that's what I do.

Today, at 1,250 miles, I had the dealer put in Penzoil Platinum 0W-20 I picked up at WalMart for $22.64(5qt).

That's an excellent price. Did they charge you for labor and the filter/o-ring?

Dang I just spent $42 at my local auto parts store for some Mobil 1 full synthetic 0w 20. Looks like I'll be using Amazon from now on. Especially since I have Prime.

Does everyone know that there are people still driving around 35 year old Toyota trucks with 600,000 miles on them that probably have never seen a drop of synthetic oil. We need some therapy. The odds of making it 35 years before something destroys the truck or the engine are very slim. It probably won't be the oil. If it does chances are it won't be us driving it.

There is nothing wrong with castrol, but just fyi castrol has no manufacturing capabilities. They spec. it out to the lowest bidder and have their name put on it. It is their spec. but they don't make it. So who's oil it is changes from time to time. It's not bad oil, just not what you think your getting.

It really doesn't matter. Any major brand synthetic oil will be fine. Just be sure to use the proper weight. Don't over think it.

Damaging the valve shouldn't even be a concern. If you hit the drain valve hard enough on something to damage it you are going to damage the oil pan just as much as if you had the drain plug in.

I've had one on my Subaru STi for over 20000 miles. I've done rallyx and I take it into the woods a lot for hunting and never once had any issues with anything hitting it. I do have the little plastic protective clip on it that they sell just in case something purely random snags the lever. But because of the direction of the lever, you'd have to be going in reverse fairly quickly to bump it open. Don't worry about it. Buy one and love it every time you change your oil and not a single drop goes anywhere but the drain pan.
