As long as you don't have head gasket problems with the Suby it's going to be the most fun, reliable and cheaper to work on. Everyone I know that's owned a VW has had expensive problems with them, even well maintained ones by the dealer.

WRX hands down. I've had a total of 7 Subarus, turbo and n/a. Still have my 08 STi. They've all been extremely reliable and fun to drive. The WRX you're looking at, is due for it's timing belt / water pump maintenance. This is one of the most crucial things to do at around 100k miles. If the timing belt breaks, your valves and probably your pistons are toast. That's some big money to fix. I'd make sure that gets taken care of before making your purchase. Other than that, WRX's are pretty much worry free if they're not stupidly modded. From what I see, it looks pretty unmolested besides the N1 style exhaust. That's most likely pretty damn loud! Oh, pay attention when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. 2nd gear is a bit weak in that 5-speed trans. Just make sure everything feels smooth. Good luck with whichever you decide on, and feel free to ask me any more questions about Suby's. I'll help as much as I can!

Subaru, hands down. Im not sure I'd take a 100K mile Jetta S if you gave it to me. That engine is a rough, noisy beast, and repairs/maintenance on a VW of that milage could add up fast.

I agree with the general consensus. Subaru FTW. Never seen a VW yet that didn't have at least one electrical problem, especially one with 100K on it.

On the other hand, the Subaru being a WRX, it's more likely to have been beat on than the VW. Have them lift it up for you and see if there's any signs of back-road rallying on the underside (dings and dents on the underside and exhaust, for instance)

I had similar feelings with the VW, although i have no direct experience with the new Jetta's, my uncle has an older jetta with weird electrical problems, and a new beetle that toasted the main wiring harness.

I wanted the Subie anyway, thanks for reminding me why I didn't want the VW even though that's the one the wife likes :) Now I can just tell her "Everyone I've talked to said they're crap"

I got them to agree to sign a document stating they would change the timing belt and water pump at my leasure if I decide to buy it.

+1 for this. IMHO 06-07 are the best years that the WRX's were made. I had an 06 WRX and loved it. Plus the online community for the WRX's is huge (NASIOC, ICLUB). I hear nothing about bad thing about VW's reliability.

Get the WRX, It will be way more fun to drive then the Vdub.
