Hi Folks, I'm new to this board. Have been lurking for a few days and really appreciate the valuable information shared here. I'm contemplating the purchase of a new or used Tacoma DoubleCab Prerunner (say 2006-2010) to use as a daily driver and to tow behind a motorhome. I understand I will need to install a drive shaft disconnect from remco towing in order to make the truck towable with all four wheels down. Remco states that a 2WD Tacoma (2005-10) may have a single piece rear drive shaft or a two piece rear drive shaft:

Has a carrier beaing. Measure rear drive shaft center of U-Joint to center of U-joint. Rear drive shaft may be single piece(SKU-1 $750.00) or two piece (SKU-2 $900.00).
I don't mind the difference in cost, but the rub is that I've been told by the installer that the two piece rear drive shaft is more problematic. And no one can seem to provide any guidance on which 2WD models have the two piece rear drive shaft. Can anyone here provide some insight or point me in the right direction? Obviously, I could examine the truck before buying, but I'd like to be able to shop for trucks that I know have a one piece rear drive shaft. For example, if I buy new, I would likely get a 2010 2WD DoubleCab with Off-Road package. Will this version of the Tacoma always have a one piece or two-piece, or does it vary even amongst trucks with the same package (sure not)? Does anyone know specifically which 2WD Tacomas have the two piece rear drive shaft?

    Many thanks...Mike

The access cab and double cab tacomas have the 2 piece drive shaft with carrier bearing.

The regular cab have 1 piece DS.

I used to have a two-piece but I purchased a one-piece Tom Woods drive shaft. You can go that route too
