These are all pictures I took during a camping trip. I stood in the middle of a water fight and took these all with a 5D Mk.II on AF.

I can wait for the 5D mark III; in the mean time, my Canon G11 is lots of fun, highly portable, and a great tool for learning. The main disappointment with the G11 is the low megapixel count (it works just fine for Facebook and TW, but for everything else, it is severely lacking), and the maximum exposure time; for instance, I am constantly limited in my creativity without a bulb timer... 15 seconds is just not enough. That said, I have taken some great shots with the G11, shots that are real sources of pride; I just know how much more I could do with a full frame, D-SLR camera. It's not about the amount of money, its about using it wisely.

Megapixels dont really matter, its the sensor size that makes the difference

Dude, calm down I'm just giving you canon guys a hard time.

Like I said don't take personal offence because I don't like canon man. You make great shots. But after trying the 5DMkII and owning the D700FX ill take my D700 any day over the 5DMkII...its my personal opinion that I think my camera has better features than the canon.... it SEEMS like the only thing the 5DMkII has over the D700 is 21 mp vs 12 but to me that's a non issue. Because less mp equals less noise, and able to capture more light in darker situations....

X2. Why do you think that you get a better photo with a 10 mp dslr than you get with a 14 mp p&s? Image sensor size mang!

    What this means is:

    1. You need better lenses and a bigger sensor. You don't need full frame to achieve that, you can go cheaper on the body and go big on the lenses, which is more important
    2. You need a body that has a manual shutter (on Canons, this is called 'BULB'). This feature is available on bodies as lowly as my XSi, which is about 1/6th the price of a 5d.

Really, focus on getting one or two top quality lenses, then see if you want to still buy the 5d. A 24mm L series and an L-series zoom is going to put you at $4k without the body.

Yes. A cheaper high quality camera and a few high IQ lenses will get you a lot further than a very high quality camera and one high IQ lens.

Even the rebel's will take spectacular shots with good glass. So if your budget is only enough to get a 5D and the kit lens I would really think about spending most of that money on the good glass and get an inexpensive body

I use Program setting on my D70s and flip between manual and auto focus depending on the shot and bracketing for HDRI

If you want to go low cost on the body, high cost on lens(es) route, then on the Canon side I would suggest a used 40D. I think it's got the best value in the used, older body market. 9AF points and they're all cross-type. IQ should exceed the latest Rebel bodies. You can get a used 40D for about $500. I sold mine a few months ago for $550 and it had 10K actuations.

I agree, I really wanted one, but they were $800 used for me at the time.
