I wanted a manually transmission, but trucks just dont have the same gear throws like they used too. So, ill keep the manual 92 pickup i have and drive a modern automatic i guess...

I look forward to driving my tacoma because of the manual transmission. I had an automatic for 10 years and just lost the joy of getting behind the wheel. I then noticed that stick-shifts are hard to come by and bought this bad boy before they became extinct! Also want my kids to learn to drive a manual in the future.

Stick it in S-1 and stomp on it. You will hit the limiter in about 2 seconds.

Like I said. If it is downshifting, you don't have it low enough for the conditions and the engine/trans combo. Just gotta learn it.

Didnt read any response and not going to get into the mess, but say this. If you are even remotely considering the Manual, GO FOR IT!!!

If you like driving manuals get a manual, that's really what it boils down to.

If you have to always use S-mode manually because you need to make sure the truck is not choosing the wrong gear constantly, then it is a bad automatic.

If there is limited stopping, manual. If there would be a lot of stopping auto.
    For off road? Auto.

I don't really think there is any problem with the transmission, I tend to think it is a charactristic of the lack of Low End Torque causing it to have to shift frequently.

I used to drive manuals in stop/go traffic frequently. As long as you don't follow closely you can usually creep along in 1st. For off-road use anything other than rock crawling an auto doesn't really have much advantage.

Only need S-Mode to keep it out of overdrive, just like when my first gen had an OD OFF button.

The engine and transmission is a system that is mismatched. Neither is a problem on its own, they are just not meant for each other. This transmission would be great for a torquey engine and the engine would be great if the truck would keep the revs up a bit.

Monthly sales numbers over the last 3 years seem to indicate otherwise, most owners are happy with the combination.

Just because the Taco is the best total package in this segment doesn’t mean it has the best transmission. It is one poor aspect of an otherwise great truck. There are 1000 threads about this transmission for a reason.

What a thread! OP, happy you asked?

That's because to most people it's just a vehicle, not a hobby, and they just aren't that picky about it.

The ones that are picky come here, this forum is great, but it's a very small, focused and vocal group that does not necessarily represent the larger group of Tacoma buyers.

They seem to be picky enough to pick it over the competition. If that's the case then the combination is successful by definition.

Most people here on TW also seem to have no problem with the transmission, a few very vocal people have big problems with how the transmission operates.

OP really needs to drive a few trucks with both transmissions and decide for himself what he thinks.

Never said it was the best but it certainly isn't bad as you have said previously. If they were bad transmissions you see them failing in large numbers and that doesn't seem to be the case.

LOL unless you're driving down a dirt road an auto has a huge advantage.
I had a manual. The auto is less fun to drive, but easier to drive and is more capable off road.

They aren’t failing but that doesn’t mean the engine and transmission are well matched. Just like strong sales does not mean it.
