Which transmissions are swappable in 1st gens?

    I posted this in the garage section, but maybe its better here:

    I have a 99 Tacoma V6 automatic (A340f). The trans is showing some trouble and I'm thinking to swap in a used one from a donor.

    Can I use one from any year first gen., or are only certain years compatible? If only certain years, which ones?

    Does it have to be a V6 as well?

    What about 4runners? I thought I read that they use different wiring harnesses and sometimes mount a little differently. Are any swappable with a 99 Tacoma?
