    I borrowed a valve spring compressor tool from AutoZone, I just can't see this thing being helpful. It's not the right variety. Pretty sure I'll need the kind that looks like a big C clamp.

    Anybody got tips on a proper tool?

    Good to know. Any tricks to using this or was it pretty straight forward? Run into any snags?

    Yep, that's the one I've got and used, just in a red box. No way it got anywhere near flexing. The 5VZ's springs aren't "heavy" by any standard (think they're around 60lb). I've compressed 90lb springs with it no issue.

    Really straight forward. Get a little magnet on a stick at any auto parts store if you don't have one already, use it to pick up the valve keepers when you compress the spring. Super, super easy.

    Does this tool help when changing out valve shims when adjusting the valve lash with the motor still in the vehicle?

    No. No it doesn't. For that you'll need to remove the cams and just leave the valves in place.
