The 2nd gen is a much better vehicle. I wouldn't purchase a turd gen, the Engine, transmission are terrible.

To be fair, my 2015 was plagued with issues. I had to replace a u joint in the driveshaft and then a ball joint. Oh, and I think my door seal leaked at new. Completely unacceptable for 150,000 miles.

Both are fine... If I had an option to purchase a really clean 2nd gen at a good price, I probably would.

I'd go with the 2nd gen. Bought new back in 2007.... the auto transmission shifts smooth as butter, engine has plenty of power, and the paint is holding up great.

I've only owned a 3rd gen, so I don't have the best perspective. I'm just here to say that Spruce Mica is the best Tacoma color ever, and that would be the only way to get me to consider a 2nd gen.

My truck is MGM, which is beautiful itself, but not Spruce Mica beautiful.

What is "unacceptable?" 150,000 mile is a lot of milage, eventually something wears out, even if you take care of any Tacoma.

Forget the generations for a minute: how are you cross-shopping a brand new and a 9 year old truck? If I'm going through the hassle and expense of buying a car, I'm going to get as new as I can afford, and a warranty if possible.

For the 2014: is it private party or at a dealer? Only way I would buy it is from the original owner, and if they had good service records (or notes, if DIY).

If you do decide to go that route, definitely check for rust or other mechanical issues. There may be a good reason someone is trying to offload a barely broken in Tacoma.

Buying a 10 year old truck for 'reliability' over a brand new one is next level big brain thinking

not really if the ten-year-old truck is more reliable in general. Warranty only lasts to 60k plus your spending a lot more money.

There's a reason why some late model 2nd gens fetch more money that the early 3rd gens.

Guy wants a tacoma and is trying to figure out if new or used is better. Pretty common practice when car shopping. Buy an older low milage example or go new.

A 10 year old anything won't be more "reliable" than a brand new truck.

I would go for brand new . Why spend that much money on a used truck . Who knows what kind of issues u will experience with that many miles down the road . Save your self the headache and get brand new with a warranty repairs in these trucks are not cheap .

The 2014 is at the same dealer I'm buying the 3rd gen actually, 1 owner too and good carfax. In the rust belt is the big concern, or would be. I'm like 90% going to buy new but damn I love that Sprice Mica and the 2nd gen 4.0L

Very Very wrong. There are ton of these examples in the automotive world where previous generation were better overall reliability wise then the newest version.

Before I started buying Toyota, I owned the 3 previous generations of Silverado. 2012, 2016 and 2019. The last one I bought was the biggest turd of a vehicle I've ever owned and is well known in the silverado community.

Take a look at the new tundra even. I would take a 2014 over a 2024 ALLL DAY.

I get your point but the 3rd gen is pretty reliable for this circumstance. Reliability isn't my big concern here.

After driving my 08 Sport for 14 years, I spent a year looking for a 2015 in good condition.
There weren't any, so I ordered a 2022 at the end of 2021.
    No regrets at all.
Sold the 2nd gen for 16K

Ya I'm gonna go new but in another world I'd love that second gen. No idea truly how it was cared for for the last 70k miles. A new truck I can make sure it's all done how I like it

If money and reliability aren't a concern buy new for sure.

But to make a statement saying that no ten your old vehicle can be more reliable than the newest version is pure bullshit.
