Looking at a 2004 four door V6 auto with 162,000 for 10,000.00 or the same truck in x-cab with 200,000 for 7500. I mean both are clean as you can get with two owners and the last owner on each has had the truck for eight years. I will assume both have had maintenance down on them for comparison. I'm thinking the cheaper because it give me more money for mod's and repairs. What do some of you think?

How badly do you want/need a 4 door? With either truck, I would definitely try to negotiate as much as possible, especially if they are two wheel drive.

4 door is a steal even if 2WD and if the frame is good. Are they 4WD?

Sorry guys they are both 4wd and both only have had two owners. Oddly both trucks sold in 2006 and have been with their respected owners since. Both have had routine maintenance done. The xcab is due a timing belt change and the 4dr had it done at 106,000. Both have good tires but the 4dr has a bed cover and a brush guard. Thanks RIck

I’d say get the 4 door. The value is much higher than extra cabs, and the extra interior space/storage is so much useful. The beds on first gens are mediocre even in the 6ft “long” beds. Unless you plan on sleeping in the bed for camping or traveling, just get the 4 door.

4 Door. They hold their value better. It comes down to what you value better - bed space or passenger space. The ext cab fits passengers but barely.

They both have the rear locker. I'm driving to look at the 4 Dr first. I wish now I would have kept the salvage on the 2001 that was totaled. It had leather seats and a new OEM suspension lift.

    Pretty much stock right now
Yeah, should have kept that one for parts.

Both sound good, and 4wd with lockers. I've only had extra cabs. I like the size, but forget about putting passengers in the back. I also prefer the longer bed.

Well, I think the condition of the frame will probably influence the value more than anything. I got an older extracab with 110k Miles for 10.9k, albeit with a somewhat rusty frame. So, all things considered, I didn't get a great deal, but I restored and protected the frame, and didn't mind putting in the time to do that. So, I would assume the higher mileage truck will be a bit more work, and if you're willing to do the work, then it'd be worth it. If you don't want to be bothered, go for the lower mileage one.

The only thing keeping 1st gen double cabs from being the best truck ever created was that Toyota for some reason neglected to offer it with a manual trans. If that doesn't matter to you (it was the 2nd 'must have' on my list when I was looking) then go for the 4 door

Hit both frames with a hammer, that will tell you which one to buy.

I would choose based on what space is more important to you (assuming that both are equal in condition & maintenance).

When I bought my extra cab, I thought about the double cab because of my two kids. But it came down to two things that steered me to the extra cab: manual transmission and the longer bed. Sure the kids would have loved the extra room of the double cab, but they didn't die sitting back there. And thinking about all of the stuff that I have hauled through the years, I would have been highly annoyed with the shorter bed.

Ok guy I just want to say how much I have enjoyed the 1 generation forum. It has given me a lot of knowledge and helped me in learning my old 2001 Tacoma. After looking at the 2004 quad cab I passed and settled on a 2007 quad cab. I'm going to be moving over to their forum to learn about the 2007. Will post some pictures tomorrow of new truck. Thanks ricky
