Unfortunately it’s just a Toyota thing
On 80,000 miles have always had it
    Changed everything

dealer stated “some Tacomas have it some don’t this whine dates back to early 2000s models to new 2025 models it is what it is”

wish I could be more help. Tried every remedy for 3 years. It comes and goes. I don’t even hear it anymore tbh. It’s still there but my brain just stopped hearing it.

you can keep digging but I’ve tried everything mentioned on this form up top of dealer recommendations, performance shop recommendations to no avail.

Checking back in 30K miles later with my unknown mileage 1995 R150F installed in my 1999 Tacoma... Still humming with the clutch out. It will be interesting if I ever send this R150F in for a rebuild or try doing it myself if it'll go away. I don't really care since my brain has also tuned it out.

Thanks for the replies, sorry to remind you guys of the noise, good to know your gearboxes haven't failed after a few years and 30k though. Might make a more detailed thread post to see if theres any other input. We could have different reasons we're hearing a whining noise as well.

Posted this before and posting here as well:

Many, many threads on the 5 speed whines (days can be spent trying to figure it out). Pretty common. Even on rebuilt Marlin crawler trannys with new clutches.

Three years ago my W59 started whining with only 80K original miles on it. Clutch in = silence, clutch out = whine except in 4th it was silent as its direct drive. I had the tranny rebuilt by a very reputable shop recommended by many TW users for $1150 with a new NSK bearing kit. Had another very reputable shop do the R&R and put in a new fork, ball, clutch, bearings, resurfaced flywheel and put in a new rear main seal while everything was open (all OEM or Aisin). $3K for everything and I should get another 100K easy. And guess what.... it still whines but runs fine.

My advice would be to drive it. If you open it all up and replace everything new... be prepared to have it still whine.

    -------

I now have 25K miles on the above mentioned work. Tranny/clutch runs fine (other then the normal Tacoma notchiness). Still whines and have just gotten used to it.

I have this on mine. When I bought it 8 years ago w/ 80kmi I noticed it right after getting truck home. I went to three mechanics including Toyota dealer. All said throwout bearing. Truck had a 30 day powertrain warranty from used dealer. I had to fight for it, but got him to pay for total trans rebuild. Trans shop said it looked brand new inside. Still replaced all bearings, etc. and the noise remained. Have driven it 100k since and it's 100% fine. Just has that noise.

Interestingly, I bought another '03 with 16kmi last year and it does not have the noise. As another said, some have it some don't. Just drive it and move on. The only time it annoys me is when I'm talking to someone out the window while idling....I feel obligated to push in the clutch.
