major whine from engine bay. i would normally assume power steering pump but my power steering is fine.

can pully bearings make the same type of noise?

    anybody had this?

Bad alternator, idler pulley, bad power steering pump. Remove the belt and spin all the pulley by hand and see if you can find the source of the noise.

Pulley bearings can get very loud. Just had mine replaced, it I had no idea how bad it was until the noise stopped. I was sure it was the power steering pump for a while, but thankfully not.

Those bearings are very sensitive to muddy water, I think that's what did mine in.

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone installed a supercharger in the middle of the night?

thanks. im guessing is the pulleys as my belt driven auxilliaries are not showing any signs of out of normal operation.

i started to get the noise when i took the truck on some very deep muddy lease roads.

idler pulleys for sure, they are cheap and easy to replace, known to fail, start there.

Invest in a $5.00 mechanics stethescope from harbor freight and touch it to the bolt head of the pulley's in question...it will pinpoint the culprit very quickly.

I had the same noise & mine was the alternator.

You should probably change your belt while you're at it, with the amount of miles you have on it (if you havent changed it recently).

Take the bottom skid pan off and work from under the truck.

yeah. i see he hasnt replied yet.

i own a steth and use it regularily. even with the skid plt off its quite tight in there. im doubting that poster has done what he recommended.

if anybody has done it, is it a matter of bending the end of the probe into an L ?

thanks, i have recently changed from the underside on my back, quite tight in there. if you used your steth do do what you are suggesting how did you position it? mine is longish with a joint half way down. i could bend the tip into an L.

for anybody who finds this, here is a great video on it. I am just going to replace all the bearings. I was going to order them from rock auto but when i checked the price a bearing locally, it was 2.99!! wtf!! this is going to take me not very long using a vice and a socket. i'll save the 300 and spend 20 instead and that includes the tim hortons on the way i will report back, its been done many times on other threads so i should be good to go.

update, I pulled it bearing off removed the rubber seal from each bearing cleaned out the bearings which were completely dry all of them, and repacked them with Aero shell 22 Greece. The noise is now almost completly gone. There is a little bit of engine wine left, but that seemed to go away as I drove it around the block. Maybe the bearings just needed to work themselves over a little bit. My guess is a very temporary fix.

on one of the pulleys, I actually broke my vice trying to press out the bearing, unbelievable, on that one I resorted to picking the rubber seal off, very carefully, I cleaned out the bearing with gasoline. Then packed it was Greece.

The tensioner pulley was very smooth, the only one that was smooth. The other ones were all trashed. Especially the one on the bottom that contains two of the bearings. That one was absolutely toasted. In fact one of the bearings in the pulley had disintegrated it's plastic housing that the bearings sit in. I am guessing this is where the noises coming from. I packed it full of Greece and shoved her back in. But I will get two of the airings and replace that one pulley bearings and be done with it. If the text looks weird in this it's because I use Siri to dictate. Have a great one.

Older post but I'll cast my line here. Have a 2013 2wd 5 speed manual with a very similar issue. Sometimes will wine right off the start, sometimes takes minuet or two of idling before it starts but once it starts its constant. Ive heard it on and off for 2-3 years but has been constant for the past few months. Higher the rpms go the louder and more pronounced it is. Almost like a differential wine if that makes sense. Also have a lower intermediate shaft for steering that's bad and has been causing a lot of issues with steering. WD-40 to the joint itself worked as a temp patch and smoothed out the steering considerably till i actually replace it but the wining noise is still there just slightly lessened now. Would excess stress on the steering pump cause a noise like this?
