I am noticing a whining noise in the rear. It almost sounds like tire noise. Toyota service tec said Tacoma 's its normal for Tacoma 's. Does anyone have similar issues.

It's the rear diff... My truck does it too. There was a recall for them leaking, but it is very annoying

I hear ya. I've spent the last few hours scouring the web about the problem. It has been a problem for Toyota for a LONG time. They should have figured out a solution by now. Take a look at this:

    http://media.fixed-ops.com/Toy_ServiceBulletins/sb0057t13.pdf

Someone on this forum suggested taking the truck in to a diff. specialist, saying that they could probably fix the issue for about $500. If mine gets too bad, I might just bypass Toyota and go that route. I have very little patience for getting the runaround.

Thanks for the link. My 05 is a manual, so I was missed that treat on the 2nd gen. It's clearly an ongoing problem that Toyota doesn't want to address. Maybe people will have to organize a class action like they did for the 2nd gen frames. There are a couple of used Tacomas on the local lot. I might test drive them and see if they howl. I'd like to hear it BEFORE I buy my truck, not a couple of months later.

As someone else mentioned already, it's the rear diff. I had the same issue, and my truck ended up getting seized up and broke down on the freeway. Thankfully this was before the rear diff recall, and there were enough diff's to go around. My warranty took care of it, and I got a new diff and axle gears, but they kept the truck for a little over a month. Of-course, everything is normal to the service techs.

I was told , it's normal tire noise, and it sounds like bad tires and has since it was new. It's not a howling, it's more like chopped tires from bad shocks. Tire rotation does not change this. 16 TRD OR AC

Mine was fine till I hit 6,000 miles no leaks , but noise is getting louder , report it so it documented then when rear fails you got paperwork to fall back on . .. it's a know problem and if they replaced frames on trucks in the past im sure switching rears will happen when they find the solution

Yes, lots and lots as you can tell by the responses.

But most owners never hear it. Because windows up and music on tend to drown it out.

At least it did it on the test drive. Most report it takes months to show up. I'm sorry to hear it was on an OR. That's the model I would want.

Well this is not reassuring Toyota... very disappointed to read this. Wonder if a regear would help, if so, which way to go? Mine will be loud some days, barely noticeable or gone at all the next... I also know where it does it, so I avoid those speeds... frustrating, but also don't want to take a hit on the truck... My 2 cents, look to fix it locally if you can afford it.
