Funny, I also had the rear diff whine TSB done and it resolved the droning howl I would get if driving in the 50mph range feathering the throttle but it was replaced by the same predictable high pitches whine on acceleration. It’s not bad though so at this point I’m not worried about it. I do suspect it’s still driveline vibration and the work they did on the TSB just changed the frequency so it only happens under acceleration. It no longer drones when cruising so that’s ok with me

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone else experienced this or found the problem? I'm not sure if mine is doing the same thing, but it sounds similar to what is being described here. During a constant gradual acceleration, I get a high pitched sound around 2-3,000 rpms. It starts out barely audible and then gets louder for a few seconds and then gradually decreases in volume until it's gone. It doesn't always do it, but it seems be getting more frequent. Oddly enough, I decided to try some 93 octane gas this week and it went away for a few days. I heard it twice while driving around town today, so it seems to be coming back. I'm not sure why it would go away for several days after changing gas. I am planning to mention when I take it in for service, but thought I would see if anyone on here had discovered anything.

Did you do the rear differential wine TSB? My ‘17 OR does this, but it is so random and infrequent that I can’t find a pattern yet

Yeah, I had the diff whine tsb done, but this is different. The diff only whines when I let off the throttle. This is only when I’m accelerating and it doesn’t always do it, but it was pretty frequent. I was shocked that switching to 93 octane gas made it go away for a few days. It’s starting to do it again now, but less often.

I am tracking what your problem is and we are on the same page with the same issue. I think the TSB changed the harmonics of the truck. Steel is like a tuning fork, post TSB just changed where to tone is at. Different gas may or may not be related, but may change vibrations just enough for it to subside.

I started noticing the same whine in the last couple of days. I have a 2018 OR short bed. I also have a minor rear diff howling at around 80km/h or so and I don’t have the TSB done.

Maybe it’s a coincidence, but someone mentioned about wet weather. I noticed it after my truck was parked outside in a down pour for the last couple of days for the first time since I got the truck. Perhaps something needs to be greased up again after heavy rainfall, but that would be kind of silly.

I do have pretty sensitive hearing for higher frequency noises as per my work physical. It is possible the noise is more common simple because most people don’t hear it or we are just a unlucky bunch!

Is it the whistle sound with the A/C issue? Like a finger on a wine glass?

Now that you mention it, it does sound like that! I hadn't thought of that, but that's a pretty good description of it. Kind of high pitched and goes up in volume gradually and then falls gradually back down. I'm not familiar with the AC issue though. Is there a specific thread that you recall for that?

A lot of the noises are familiar to me since my old Camry also made the same noise. On mine, the AC noise is different from the whining noise while accelerating. The AC noise is more of A hissing or sighing noise for me. I also didn’t have my AC on when I first started noticing the noise.

Keep in mind most of the whining from our Tacomas comes from the owners

Mine has it too. ‘18 Dcsb. I can’t always recreate it but seems more likely to happen 2-2.3k rpm and seems to be dependent on throttle position. Could it be a intake sound? Its so weird and possibly unrealated but I never heard this before flashing 1.04. For reference, I also have the TRD CAI.

Yeah. Also from people whining about owners’ whining.

Some owners can hear the trans pump. Rev it to 2200 rpm while in park and see if you hear it, then try it again with it in neutral.

@Pickeledpigsfeet @KanPanic @Taco1701 Recently created a thread with issues similar to this. Mine is a '17 6MT access Cab. I hear a subtle whine when accelerating around 2000-2500 rpm and it goes away when I shift and the RPMs drop momentarily but then starts back up when I start applying gas again. I can create the noise when in neutral and just rev the engine past 2000rpms.
