Whining is NOT normal... maybe your service rep has a wife that likes to whine as maybe for HIM that's normal. Not for the rest of us.

Slight Correction, whining noise for some of us remained, for others it was gone with the new diff for awhile then "came back"....not aware of anyone the rear diff replacement actually FIXED for good though.

@jeff_taco_4x4 I believe traded his Tacoma for a new silverado after he had initially had his rear diff replaced for this same issue. I could have the wrong guy though.

It went away after my differential was replaced. The new differential did not start whining until about 500 miles on it. Does that make sense? It tends to get louder with miles.

You must be reading this wrong. I was poking at you for correcting my post. I totally understand it was replaced and no sound until 500 miles then the sound was back ("still there"). My "still there" comment was generalizing saying sure you can get it replaced but it ends up coming back or is "still there" as in the problem is "still there" even after being replaced.

Nah. all is good here runs quiet as a mouse.
Try a different road, go outside your county, or state and see it the same sound is still there. If it is, you may have an issue as small as a leak and/or fluid level on account of it. There have been reports of loose diff cover fasteners being loose on this forum.
But different road construction/type and tire combination can give off scary sounds.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I got the LT reg cab short bed with 5.3 L v-8 with tow package (heavy duty suspension). Love the truck: power & acceleration is super! (with very little effort/rpms) and the quiet cabin ride at all rpm's. Cruise control and pulling my trailer is really easy for this truck (rpms don't even go over 2000 rpm). Although the ride is quieter, the ride is choppy compared to my Tacoma (stiff heavy duty shocks with the tow package and the short wheel base probably). I now have the remote start on my fob and also on my cell phone with the "myChevrolet" app as well as lock/unlock doors on the app too (didn't know I had those features until a week after owning the truck). I do miss the JBL of the Tacoma and it's nice/plush ride going down the road. I also don't have Qi phone charging (only available on crew cab models) :(. Headroom is super (I can wear a hat!) because of no moon roof perhaps. But I now really love the 10 way power seats...my bad back can find the perfect spot :) Tacoma really needs to get those power seat! Note: cost of this truck was the same as my Loaded Tacoma. I had to put 2000 bucks down to get my payments about the same ($2500 Chevrolet rebates also helped). Overall, I wanted more torque...and I got it now.

edit: forgot to mention: I cannot feel/hear this Silverado's transmission shifting...it's that smooth! Tach rarely goes over 2000 rpms. On the flip side, cost of new accessories is draining my savings!

Welcome to the club OP! :D

At this point I'd say get it documented at the dealer (which you have ) and sit and wait for a TSB with the rest of us....

I don't notice a whine in my differential, maybe I am tone deaf., all I hear is my tires on the pavement. If someone besides me took it for a drive maybe they would say I have a whine in it.

Well if there is a whine in it and it doesn't go out then I definitely can live with it.
