So folks just to share my most recent adventure.... I am the new owner of a 2017 TRD Off Road which has presented the delightful 55 MPH off throttle whine from rear end. After doing the dance twice with Toyota serviceI demanded the service mgr ride with me and he miraculously heard the sound.

They changed the rear leaf spring damper. Fail

They opened a case with Toyota US and were auth to change rear gear set. FAIL Toyota said this is normal sound from the rear end. They said it was (no kidding) the sound of "healthy gears meshing and the result of proper machining process). Guess that means that every other truck and car I have ever ridden in was built poorly following their logic . I think they should have at least kissed me first.

So new ring and pinion didn't change it and damper didn't change it.

Has anyone found an actual fix? I read a few comments on pinion bearing. Would that have been changed when the popped in the new dif? Did that stop it for anyone? How about rear wheel bearings? Driveshaft carrier bearing?

I really would like to keep the rig, I've got plans for it. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Rear wheel bearings. I had one go bad. It droned through the cabin starting around 20. By 60, it was all you could hear. It would calm down a bit going faster, but came back at a higher speeds.
