Whining sound from engine compartment

    Does the sound increase if you turn the wheels lock to lock? if so it sound like a power steering pump....keep us posted. Good luck!

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
    first thought would be alternator but in listening I'd go pulleys first.

    Likely idler pulleys and/or tensioner.

    My 2019 Tacoma started doing it again today, it’s going on to the dealership Friday, I think it’s the idler pulley too.

    Hey so my truck made a sound like that too it turned out to be my alternator had a small peice of road debri in the grooves of the
    Pulley it burned my belt too it was strange i pushed the gas pedal and that strange sound would come out

    Alternator. Mine had done it from new (130k now) goes away at higher revs. Turn off the radio and see if it goes away.

    The low whine is always there when hot. Never at first start up or for first few miles. Pitch of the sound varies. When I first started hearing it, it reminded me of old school heating radiators in my old high school. I suspect water pump for that reason. Anyone agree? Will check pulleys and alternator as others have suggested. Sound developed after 200k.

    Mine goes away if I spray a little Teflon lube on the front of the P/S pump pulley. Comes back after a while though. Definitely sounds like a supercharger.

    Need to isolate, both the idler bearing and the alternator can make the noise. Cheap stethoscope from the tool store will help.
