It’s hard to determine if this is normal behavior or normal behavior that you are not accustomed to. If you gave a point of comparison it might help. Have you owned a pickup truck previously?

Not personally, but my family has a Sierra and I would drive F-150s for work for months at a time.

Can you feel any vibrations or oscillations through the floor when it happens? You can try switching into 4wd and see if that makes it stop. If the noise/vibrations go away while in 4wd, then it is the driver side bearing in the front differential acting up. Common problem for it to act up after putting any lift/leveling kit on the front, but it has also had problems on some stock trucks.

I don't really feel any significant vibrations during the whirring/whining noise. I do feel a bit of a jolt sometimes when it shifts rough.

I will try 4wd next time I'm out. I have used the 4wd a bit, but not enough to have heard the noise in 4wd

Does the noise go away when you let off the throttle ?

Yes. The noise only happens when I'm under load around 2-2.5k RPM. When I let off, or if the RPM go over 2.5k then normally it goes away

Mine does the same thing only it happens at 49mph … I have addressed it with the dealer no solution or fixed performed . I did some further research and read it’s a differential noise under load . If you find a answer with your dealer let me know . Crap is annoying .

Sometimes it’s hard to pinpoint where the noise is really coming from…

If it sounds like a kazoo in the front end and is related to speed over RPM, it’s air blowing in the lower control arms and there’s an old TSB. Not sure if the new trucks come stock with the rubber plugs that solve that prob. Just tape over 3-4 holes in each lower arm to try that theory.

The previous post asking about it going away in 4WD is related to a roller bearing in the driver side of the front differential. Aftermarket has better solutions than dealer, if this is the case. (Search: ECGS Bushing)

If it’s a whining/humming coming from the back it has to do with the rear differential resonating through the leaf springs. That’s also addressed by TSB, at least in older Gen3’s. Best fixed by putting a new/better/aftermarket set of leaf springs in the back.

The clunking downshifts while braking are typically related to the rear driveshaft slip yoke not being greased enough. Get a grease gun or have the dealer grease this for free. It’s part of their pre-delivery inspection that they sign off saying they did, but never do.

Otherwise, is there aftermarket suspension installed? Brake, axle and wheel bearing issues are not common with these trucks, when new.

    Also…
If you are not in CA, the KDMax 6.0 ECU tune will make your shifting EXTREMELY better. Best 300 you could spend on a Tacoma. Hands down. I’d go with SLT version..

I am running everything stock. It does not depend on speed. I could be doing 60mph or 30mph, if it's around 2k RPM under load it will start to make the noise.

I am thinking it could be the ECU. I have seen some people have transmission issues until they flash the ECU. I wasn't sure if this was my issue, but it seems like updating the software is a good option.

Also, the transmission shifting weird isn't noisy. I don't hear anything when slowing down, but the vehicle kind of jerks forward or backwards when shifting down to a stop.

I have the same issue on my 2021. No vibration, just a whine around 2k rpm from what sounds like the transmission or the rear end. Asked the dealer and they claimed to not hear anything unusual. I'm at 10k miles and am keeping a watch on it to be sure it doesn't get worse.

This is why I don't want to go to a dealer. They're just gunna keep my truck for a few days and say they can't find anything.

Disappointed my first brand new Toyota is already acting up.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one with this issue
