@trekker you can put you ideas up over her if you want.. that way you can keep track of them

That's a brilliant design.. you could make some samples spaces for shooter bottles or shot glasses or something to complete the state

    Nice, thanks @DC 17_3

That's a great idea! My wife's quarantine honey-do list is about to be put on the back burner

I dunno how I want to construct it though... attach pallet wood together laying flat and then cut the shape from that or just cut up a nice piece of plywood. I think the plywood would be a cleaner look, but the pallet wood character is nice and rustic looking. I really like the torched look of your cabinet and I may have to steal that idea

Haha I saw that idea on IG or something so feel free to use it..I like the pallet wood idea.. if you have the space to lay it out on the floor and cut out your design then transfer that to the wall.. I think that's how I'd do that.

Make sure you've removed all the nails and staples and whatever else. I used a handheld torch on mine. Being pallet wood it could be any type of wood, which would burn differently and create a totally different pattern from one piece to the next. The key to the torch is to go from one end to the other in a slow but deliberate pace. If you stop it'll catch fire. If you move it closer and farther away it'll burn differently. I feel like you will have some extra to practice on.

If you like the wood burned look. Search shou sugi ban, Its basically what he did but it usually involves more burning/charing of the wood and then you can clean it up to your liking. You can also find info about why the wood selection can make a big difference. Your big torch would be perfect to do it with! I still need to buy one of those torches you have.

Yeah I didn't know if my torch would be too much or not, but I'll rig up some practice pieces and see how it goes. I seem to have lost my small torch which SUCKS.

Interesting! I need to know more about that :D

I'm a bit of a geography nerd (I'm a land surveyor) so I was thinking of getting a router to carve out the major rivers before attaching the shelves. I dunno if that'll start to look too cluttered though, but at that large scale it would probably be okay and still look decent.

Basically you use water / salt / Baking soda. You can google it. It’s not hard.

Usually shou sugi ban is for waterproofing. I believe they use some sort of Japanese Cedar and generally not recommended for interior use unless you seal it off. Even with the light scorching I did.. I still sealed the doors and shelves in 3 coats of polyurethane.

Depending on what you make the boxes from you can always paint or stain the whole thing too. Of you do light it on fire it's best to make sure any old paint etc is removed first especially from the old pallet wood. That would can potentially have some sort of treatment on it and the smoke/fumes can be toxic.

I imagine I'll be sealing with poly as well. The box shapes on the design are there to represent the area that bottles will occupy, so I'll just be adding 1/2" shelves at the bottom lines of the box designs. I bet fully boxing the areas in would be a cool look too. I gotta be weight conscious of this thing though.

Looks like you've got some great ideas to start with and some research to do.

When I did my metal doors I printed out a vector file of the logo onto 16 sheets of paper to be able to cut out the stencil.. you might be able to do something similar with Google Earth to get the rivers etc..

@Misplaced Nebraskan @bvbull200 @Kanyon71 ... Got another one to throw out some ideas for! Haha

It depends. We just have to do multiple passes depending on the thickness of the wood.

The cut out areas would be a good place to add some accent LED lighting too.. ( haha I totally went through that phase )

Yeah, I did some googling earlier of adding LEDs to shelves lol

I'd like to add some but I don't want any cords where I'll have this hanging. Maybe I could try battery power? Hmmmmmm
