Honestly, my nose for bourbon whiskey is just beginning to learn! I don't really want to say hey this tastes similar to say.. Elijah Craig and then you try it and find it to be the furthest thing from it Haha.

Being that it's a fairly new distillery, they're not going to have any 10 year olds or anything like that and he's still developing new things that will likely come out this fall.

My recommendation is to visit your local HyVee and check their shelves. Since HyVee is Iowa based, they do a good job of supporting the locals. Since Iowa is a controlled state they should be able to order it without any problems if they don't already carry it. Looks like you have a few to choose from.

Just so you're aware, you'll have a couple of miles of gravel road to get to the distillery so be careful on your bike. It's pretty well marked.

By no means is it a large operation, but the owner is super friendly, passionate about what he's doing and has a lot of knowledge about alcohol in general.

Thanks for the FYI on the gravel! I don't mind it too much, but some others I ride with may not do so well on the gravel.

I totally agree with the first line. I too am just getting into whiskey as well. For me it started from having some Old Fashioned's and learning how to make them....then it snow balled into a small mostly bourbon collection.

I really like JJ's in Sioux Falls, they have a very wide selection of bourbon and rye. Many of which they have opened and they aren't afraid of giving samples if you're serious about purchasing. They also get rare bottles of whiskey like Pappy Van Winkle that can be sampled, for a cost of course. I've tried it, it's fantastic, but I could never justify spending that much on a bottle of spirits.

If you are ever in the Sioux City area there is a place you need checkout. Callahan's Liquor Store in South Sioux City (Nebraska side of the tri-state). Don't let the "cheap liquor store" vibe fool you. They have many rare and sought after beers, wines, bourbons, ryes and scotches (in to the $5k range) as well as a cigar humidor and a Cigar Lounge that you can smoke a cigar in if you purchase a cigar there. The cigar lounge is absolutely gorgeous, has a self service bar with many glasses, mixers, ice, a poker table, lighters, cutters, punches, cedar sticks, tv, nice couches/chairs and a restroom. It is a hidden gem that is fantastic.

Cheap and reliable but not the best or most refined...

Give Bulleit or Tin Cup a try and you'll never buy Jack again! We have enough hair on our chests so we can drink the good stuff lol

I'm not a huge fan of Bulleit, to me the flavor is flat and has way too much burn. Not a bad mixer though. But that's why there are SO many choices out there, everyone likes something different.

My "Daily Drivers" tend to be Woodford Reserve (all), Jefferson's (especially the Oceans, finish aged for about 1yr at sea), 4 Rose's (anything but their base whiskey), Weller's if I can find it and pretty much any of the Heaven Hill bourbons. There are some others that I really like as well but don't get often. I really like the "barrel selects" from different liquor stores because they are often a little different than just a single barrel and have unique flavor profiles.

I do somewhat agree with your assessment of JD being somewhat basic, but don't look over the single barrels or limited releases. They make some fantastic whiskeys that are sought after even by aficionados.

Not much of a reply to your current question...

But your post inspired me to move my small collection to the basement on a storage shelf I’ve got. Used some 4K sign LED lighting from Super Bright LEDs. I love the color because it’s a pure white with no blue to it and they are less than $1 ea! I used 9 of them, 7 of the 2 LED across the front and one on each side about 3-4 in from the corner.

Also I have this clear JD I got when in TN about 5 years back, tastes terrible...but had to have it!

from what I understand it’s only available in TN and a couple surrounding states.

I did see a bottle of JD Gold the other day locally. First time I’ve seen that, but I notice you had one.

The Gold 27 is pretty tasty! Has a good maple finish to it. Definitely over priced most places but it's worthwhile to me!

Someday I'll make a trip down to TN but I guess I'll wait until after this whole 'rona thing blows over. I definitely like seeing bottles that I don't have tho!
