I drive a 2001 Tacoma Pre-Runner. The cat. converter is not in the best shape, so I already know that.

In the last couple of months, however, I have noticed a mild “whisper” noise at speeds of >30 mph. It sounds like driving with a window open, not quite a whistle. It appears to be coming from the area of the front passenger wheel, but I am not 100/100 about that.

I changed out the brake pads today, but still have the noise.

What could be causing this? It is a mystery — it’s never done that before.

    Thanks.

Well, my first thought is that the air intake is in the passenger fender. You should start by popping the filter box open, inspect the filter, etc.. Make sure there is not debris in there. The air is pulled in through an "elbow" out to the fender, use something flexible to ensure it's clear. Inspect the air intake tube, resonator boxes, traps, and vac lines.

I agree. I would also check to make sure that the fender liner on that side was all intact, like make sure none of the little clips have broken causing a gap.
