"Whistling" noise first 30 seconds or so after startup/driving

Well I guess the title pretty well says it all, but I'm getting a short (30 seconds to a minute) whistling sound when I first start up. I just heard it this morning for the first time, so it may be the colder weather...but I don't remember it from last winter.

A few changes I've made recently which may or may not have caused this added noise....

    - Changed the (I think it's called the) secondary air intake filter to the UNI-filter that is featured here elsewhere.

    - Added a dual USB charging outlet under the radio (can't imagine this did it)

    - Changed the latches on the bed cover from crappy cam style to spring latch style (again, wouldn't think this caused it)

    - Changed the oil and dropped the cap from the 5'er down the engine bay (a week ago....would think this is long gone by now)

    - Moved my trailer connector into the left tag light hole. (I'm just listing everything...don't think this would have done it).

So now, my guess is that the UNI-filter changed the airflow somehow and I'm hearing it more now than before. But it only happens for 30 seconds or so, so I dunno.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this, or has anyone heard this before?

Thanks in advance for any and all ideas, comments, etc.

Have a great day ladies n gents :)

    How are your belts?

It damn well could be air moving over that cap too

Thought about belt squeal. Belts seem to be in good order, but I don't know the age for sure. The cap....the oil jug cap? Possibility I guess...it may have gotten caught down there somewhere. This morning when I left, I could hear it for about 30 seconds like I said...in that time, I doubt I hit 20 MPH, but still possible. I'll check that out when I get off work and update yay or nay on that one.

    Thanks for the quick response.

It’s tough to say. Is the first 30 seconds at any speed / idle or only at certain speeds? If it’s only say 14-17mph it could be the damn oil cap. Otherwise, it’s something else.

Somebody more knowledgeable than myself will chime in with better info I’m sure. I’m just spitballing. I’ve troubleshooted some strange strange things though.

I know when I installed the uni filter on mine, it was way louder than with the factory foam in place

    Someday...
My 2012 has always done this. I think it's part of the smog system or something like this. Never worried about it though.

Makes sense about the UNI-filter. Also, it's still worth a look for that oil jug cap. Also, to repeat :) ....just want to point out that it's an oil JUG cap, not my CC cap lol.

Speaking of oil jugs....anyone else ever wonder what engineer came up with the idea of using a FOIL (metal) seal on a bottle of oil that you're about to pour into your engine? I'm always VERY careful...overly careful to make sure i account for everything that comes off...and try to remove all the foil on the half of the spout that the oil will run over at least. Overly paranoid probably...just seems like a stupid idea to me. I know it has to be sealed with something but.....foil? C'mon....................

Anyhow, back to the noise. Thanks for all the replies. When I get home I'll check for the cap, and also maybe I'll come out after it's sat for a while and start it and go out under the hood and see if I can pinpoint the noise to the uni-filter...or wherever it's coming from.

Sounds like a consensus then :) . Thanks folks...it's much appreciated. Glad it's nothing serious.

Edit: By the way, I checked everywhere I could reach/see for the oil jug cap and it's nowhere to be found. I'm assuming it's in a ditch somewhere by now.

As most others have said the uni filter makes it so much louder, I started my truck with the hood up after I installed mine and it was almost uncomfortable.

Might be the unifilter but worth checking the supercharger. They are known for their whirling/whistling sounds especially at startup. Good luck.

Is a whistling supercharger a bad thing? (and for the record, I JUST learned I had a supercharger lol)

Sorry, I think I wasn't clear. "I JUST learned I had a supercharger" from the post above mine lol. Maybe I don't. I thought Drtnap19 meant we all had 'em...but maybe not :) .

The old girl's kinda dirty right now. If it was from off-roading, I'd post pictures with pride....unfortunately, it's just from being dirty :( . But I will eventually.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. That's what it sounded like...not as loud from where I was, but I'm sure that's what it was. And thanks again for doing that for me.

I had the same issue with my truck. Thought the same thing with the cold weather , didn’t think anything of it. Then a month ago couple of the pulleys seized while driving causing quite the mess. Belt snapped , coolant everywhere etc

Hmmmm....maybe I'll take the belt off and give em a spin and listen when the weather breaks a little. And naturally if I'm gonna bother to take the old belt off....well even my cheap ass wouldn't put the old one back on...that hasn't been changed in 75,000 miles that *I* know of, and maybe 85,000 miles.

I might even let go of a few extra bux and change out the pulleys.....depends on mood and condition. :)
