So I just went to turn my my truck on walked around the back and saw white smoke coming heavily from my exhaust pipe. I'm at 3020 miles on my new truck and haven't done an oil change. Am I burning oil because I haven't changed it yet or has anyone else had this happen before? Can I wait till 5k to change it or should I do it now? It was cold this morning and I was blasting the heater as well

It's just condensation most likely. Not actual smoke.

My first question was temperature. Shouldn't be an issue with oil change. See if it's a constant problem and how long it remains white. If not, it's normal here and there and usually is just condensation.

Update the smoke went away after driving 10 minutes. Their was a lot of condensation today and I'm less than 2 blocks from the ocean this morning. I'll check back later when I start "Bruce" up again. Still curious when I should do an oil change on a new truck

When I bought mine brand-new they said change the oil as per the regular interval. They told me no special first oil change was necessary

just condensation in the morning. no different than when you see your breath. as for going 5k for an oil change, that shouldn't be a problem since you're not due for one until 10k.

Simple rule of thumb...smoke doesn't dissipate that quickly, condensation will.

Mine usually takes a smoke in the morning after we have sex, but then it clears out.
But if it smelled like coolant, or anything strange, then I'd be heavily drinking tequila!
    Cheers!

    Cool morning too, right?

BLUE smoke is oil. White smoke that doesn't go away is coolant. White "smoke" that goes away is just condensation.

Remember, one of the major products of burning gasoline is water vapor.

Blue smoke = burning oil. I had a Dodge that had a TSB for white smoke at start up . It had a bad gasket for the intake manifold .

You see how helpful ppl in this forum are OP, you asked about the white smoke, now it turns out there's other color smokes too. I guess it depends on what you're smoking as to the color??:confused:

I'll just stick to tequila for today, but that's just me!

    happy Cinco de Mayo!
    Cheers!

Check it while at operating temperature if you are still concerned.

Recommending oil changes is a tough challenge. Toyota says 16,000km / 10,000miles. Many will accuse you of throwing money away if you do anything sooner. Now I changed mine at 1200km and this is my reasoning: Your motor will create more wear particles that end up in the oil in the first oil change interval than they will create in the rest of its life. At the LEAST I would suggest changing the filter early. I figured do both because at $60 or so at the dealer I can afford to.

We used to build motors and run them until operating temperature then shut them down. Let them fully cool and do this again at least twice. Third time we would run the motor to 60% of redline and add 5% each lap until 90%. Once again cool off to full cold. Next time we would go to full redline and as soon as we hit redline we backed off to 60% and then redline or as high as we could for 15 laps or approx 30 minutes. Come in and change the oil. After that abuse it to full potential. The theory behind our break-in procedure is this - The initial heat cycles ensure everything is bedding in and expanding slowly. Any issues that show up now can be dealt with quickly. After the second heat cycle things should be mated or show issues. Then when increasing revs and allowing them to drop any particles that end up in the oil can reach the filter before being welded to something you don't want it to attach to. So adding force to the rings and mating surfaces forces them to wear and then the coasting allows oil to flush the wear particles away. By changing the oil at this point there is no question as to the capability of the filter to capture any additional wear particles. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CONDITION OF THE OIL. The oil should be fine but changing it ensures any particles still in the sump are flushed out instead of waiting for them to get caught in the filter.

I don't fault anyone for doing their oil changes to Toyota specs. But as an industrial mechanic millwright my professional opinion of synthetics is they can either extend the life of your engine or lengthen the oil change intervals for a cost savings. Pick any one. You can't have longer life and longer change intervals. So I personally pick longer engine life and will do my oil changes early but that is my cost and my choice. So listen to whatever anyone else says and make the decision that works for you. If you are keeping the truck for 5 years or less do longer changes for a cost savings. If you are keeping it for a very long time then you could do Toyota recommended intervals or choose to do it sooner. It is all up to you.
