I keep my bed cap on in the winter and that's it. Never had a problem with traction unless super icey but that doesn't happen all that much. Good off-road tires help.

No but it's a really good idea.

I drive 90 miles on snowy/icy roads four or five days a week 5-6 months out of the year. Even with 4 studded snow tires, a 200-ish lb canopy and another 100lbs of sand over the axles I'll still break traction at some point or another.

The weight helps A LOT compared to nothing at all.

This is good find. I searched the Canadian site and they offer the same product for $5.99.

Unfortunately I don't have a Lowes location near me.

Just checked the Canadian site and the closest thing I saw was 25kg ~ 55lbs bags for 8.70. It isn't sand though the bag says all purpose gravel.

Thanks for the info though chaosrob! I'm sure it'll help others out when shopping around for weight to put in the bed.

    Pretty much stock right now

I just did this a week or so ago on about 1/2" powdery snow. Bed was empty but I do have a shell. Did a 90 to the left then a 180 to the right, but kept it on the road and away from the telephone pole that was coming up fast on the left.

    I recommend some weight.

This is the stuff I have. I decided to use a bag of this and a bag of cold patch asphalt that I have laying around and will use in the Spring/Summer anyways. That's about 100lbs. I think it will really help up here in Western Mass when I drive on some abandoned town roads that aren't plowed, as I tested for the first time in the Tacoma just a few days ago without any additional weight in the back. And of course just for normal driving as well. That's in addition to the fiberglass cap. Anyways I just had these bags laying around so I figured it was a good solution.

I like using bags of water softener salt. They are 40 lbs plastic sealed bags and I get about 8 of them at the first sign of snow or ice. Lay them in front of the rear axle. I'm going to use them threw out the year, so it's an easy way of adding weight.
