    Hey guys,

Looking at 4.88s/5.29s soon. Hopefully before Summer ends.

Looking for a good shop to do mine. I plan on doing this before I move to 35s. Going through the threads I’m leaning towards 5.29s.

I usually do my own work but I’d rather pay a reputable shop to reduce down time.
    Thanks,
    Sam

Don't go to 4wheel parts. They did my last taco. They ordered the wrong ring and pinion then lose the bolts.

Oh I heard my fair share of horror stories. I’m even debating ordering the clamshell and 3rd member from ecgs and swapping it myself.

Just Differentials in Cashmere, Wa. did my front 3rd setup and i bought nitro gears and all the parts from them. Great service and fast turn around.

ECGS is a good option too, i bought my locker from them, but i was able to save a couple hundred without dealing with shipping and driving to Cashmere instead.

4 wheel parts is an absolute joke, they are the walmart of the offroad world. I asked for a quote on labor for shits and giggles while i was there buying my winch (only bought my winch there cause it was on sale and they have an extra warranty) and the guy quoted me 1100. I said no, just labor, i'll supply parts and bring you just the 3rd.... 1100. Labor from JD's was a little over 400.

As my primary daily, I went with the Auto.

Currently on 285 33s but I’m switching to 35s. I’ll need to do the other maintenance things like reinforcing the spindles and cam tabs as well.

I’m not a wheeler by any means but I’ve been doing a lot of camping and would like to explore Washington’s back country.

And I just think 35s on a Tacoma just looks badass.

Did you add any lockers? With the type of off-roading I do, I barely see myself needing a front locker. I don’t wheel hard enough to even use the factory locker at times.

what was the out the door price if you don’t mind me asking with parts an all.

I don’t think I’d go 5.29’s with an auto and not wheel it. I am on 35’s with a six speed and 5.29 gears, it’s great on the rocks but crap on the highway. At 70 miles an hour, 6th gear I’m over 3000 RPM.

I haven't done my tacoma yet, but when I did my jeep I ended up going with Mule (they did front and rear lockers and gears). Just Differentials was also on the list, but Mule was closer and could get me in earlier. When I was talking with them, the pricing was about the same. They both also called out the additional changes that would be needed for the jeep which a few other places I called weren't aware of (which is a reason they were ruled out).

Mule did mine, highly recommend them. Their retail store is dangerous to the bank account as well...especially if you swing by the brewery next door!

6 speed as in manual? I believe autos are geared much lower than manuals.

Just Diff quoted me $3,349 out the door.

ECGS assembled 3rd member and clamshell is $3,862 which includes a core charge($1,950). That’s including solid bushings, new bearings, gear oil and FREE shipping. No sales tax.

I’ll save over $1,400 if I choose to tackle it myself. Which.. can go towards other goodies for the rig.

    Decisions decisions.

yeah I added a Harrop front locker, I ordered that from ECGS and had it shipped direct to JD’s. They only setup my front diff and supplied gears and install parts, and modified the housing for the Elocker. that was about 1200 all together. My rear diff is a factory 4.30 out of a 96 4Runner. I pulled and swapped the diffs myself which wasn’t bad if you’re used to working on your own rig. You’ll need an extra hand for the front diff though

Every time I get close having someone else work on my ride, I always ended up doing it myself. I’ll go with a 3rd and clamshell from ECGS just to save money and use that towards a cage and rtt for my softopper.

How difficult was the front? I have a cheap transmission jack with straps that I used for my Yukon a while back. Maybe that’ll help with the extra hand. I’m always solo while working on the rig.

not too difficult, the trans jack will help lower it for sure. The hardest/most time consuming part was dealing with the breather hoses, I found once the diff was free if you tip it down towards the front and lower it a couple inches you have more room to remove the little bracket that holds the breathers to the diff and have more room

I just had my regear done recently to 5.29s with Mule Expedition. So far no complaints through the whole process!

Mule quoted me 2800 out the door with ecg. Is that pretty standard? Feel like it’s on higher side?
