Who does your oil changes?

I've got one (Fumoto). Works great for me... I wouldn't off-road with one, though. Since they hang below the oil pan you could catch it on a rock and snap it right off... then you're stuck in a mud hole or a rocky hill in the middle of nowhere with no oil and no plug.

Since I don't do any real off-roading it works for me. Drains slower than the normal plug but I just attach my drain hose, pop off the filter, open the drain and then let it run out while I check my other fluids and filters.

 

Real men change their own oil. I don't trust anyone else to do it properly.

I have a 1st gen and the oil drain valve does not hang below the skid plate. I have been off roading several times with no problems. No leaks either.

I let the dealership do it only because with the truck purchase they gave me free oil changes for the life of the truck. If that wasn't the case, then damn skippy I would be doing it myself. I may start anyway just for convenience factor alone. Hate dropping it off and waiting for hours or coming back to pick it up later. I could do it myself with synthetic in a few minutes.

 

Those oil guys work at McDonalds too when their shift is over at the lube shop.

 

Dealership. The price difference between doing it myself and the dealership doing it is well worth it. I drop my truck off, walk 2 doors down to McDonalds and buy a #3. By the time I'm done eating and walking off the greasy burger I just ate, truck is done and I didn't have to even worry about getting dirty.

 

Take mine to Toyota. They only charge $30. I figure that's maybe $5 or so more than it would cost me and it's way more convenient.

 

I typically own my vehicles for years, so ensuring their maintained well is smart. Too many horror stories about wrong filters, cross threading etc for me to allow anyone to touch my Tacoma. Just passed 120k miles, and have not had ONE problem with it. Doing my own work "bonds" me with these vehicles. You just get to know at a very personal level, what's going on under the hood.

Its high enough so you don't need to jack it up, and the oil filter location and spill proof shield/spout thing couldn't be any easier.

 

My first 8 oil changes were free from the dealership but now I do them myself. I really don't want anyone touching my truck, especially quick lubes.

Since I bought it, I've been taking it to a local Good Year store. My father works for Good Year and is a salesman for one of the shops where I live so I get an oil change pretty cheap. However, recently had an incident with a store down in FLA when I was down there. Long story short, after reading the DIY thread, Ill be doing my own oil changes for now on.

 

I do it myself, so I can buy the good stuff

 

Funny how some dealers in the US give their patrons free oil changes(ilovetacos 8 free changes) yet nothing like that was ever offered here in New England. I am sure its built into the price of the truck going out the door.

I see nothing wrong with taking it to a dealer or good qualified trustworthy garage to have your oil done. Its just fun to do it providing, in my case you have a warm dry day, which is why I have my oil change schedule early spring and late fall, which works well for me.
In the past I have saved all of my old oil and donated it to a guy who has a garage and he heats(waste oil heater) it by burning used drain oil. At the cost of heating oil here in the north east, its nice to try and help a guy out and get rid of the waste oil.

We have all heard about the quickie oil change stores " have your oil changed in 9 minutes" or something like that. IMHO they use low quality oil filters or what they call "2500 mile filters" and in typical retail work they really don't care if they put 4 qts when your vehicle may take 4.5qts.

Again its taking pride in doing a simple job correctly, unlike a lot of things today.

I use to take my 05 Tacoma to the local dealer..paid extra because of the 4x4, found they didn't lube the front end and once in Hemit CA they didn't even change the oil filter!!!!! Of corse they offered free changes??? Yea right!!! I have done every oil change/lube on my 09, very easy!!!!! Just turned 34,000 miles!!! Running great!

 

I do it myself. I've seen too many incidents of sloppy dealer/quicklube places. Plus, I enjoy the time working on the truck and my daughter loves to help.
