New's media in Memphis Tn said that people in the area felt the shake. :goingcrazy:.... Memphis is about, oh, 800 miles from the epicenter. On a similar note, KPT, what do you know about the New Madrid Fault. We have been due for a "big one" for years.

I didn't feel anything and I can say with reasonable certainty that no one in Memphis felt anything either. People in this area cry wolf all the time

Yeah that's the one. The quakes in the early 19th century created Reelfoot lake in NW Tennessee, and, also was said to have caused the Mississippi River to run backwards for a time.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reelfoot_Lake
Much of Memphis is being "earthquake-proofed" now.

When I'm not flying I'm a part time consulting engineering geologist. Mostly work on landslide/geological hazards related to linear corridor utilities such as pipelines and powerlines, highways, etc. Actually, these days it's mostly natural gas/petroleum product pipelines. Been logging a ton of rock core lately for horizontal-directional drills for pipelines. I'd say that's accounted for about 75% of my consulting work in the past year.

I'd like to break into your industry but I don't have a huge structural/hardrock background. My background is more surficial/geomorphology.

Felt it here about an hour northwest of Philly. Felt it swaying on the third floor at work. Actually didn't think too much of it. There's a fault line that runs right by my house we've had probably 10 or so small quakes over the past 15 years. Largest only being 4.6. But enough where I've to extent have gotten used to experiencing small ones. Thought it was just one from that again, was a little surprised to hear it was a 5.8 in Virginia.

I felt it big time. I swiped out at work at 1:52 walked 10ft and all the duct work and pipes hanging from the ceilings were swinging almost 2ft. I work for the railroad and the trains are on raised tracks(3ft higher than ground) and they were creaking.we didn't know what was going in at first. We ran out of the building like it was in fire. Not going to lie. I pooped myself. Lol

gotta say though, if it was your first earthquake, it'd be kinda scary.

The last big one we had was a 6.9. That was a fun one. Watched part of a mountain fall into a bay.

This earthquake started in VA and was felt from Toronto to Georgia. That's over 1000 miles that the earthquake affected. Seems like a big deal...
