That's pretty cool, great to see another geologist on here. Most of the guys I work with are stratigraphers, so having surficial experience isn't a bad thing at all.

It is very unlikely that anything that happens in Virginia woudl trigger something in CA. California, being right on the boundary of the Pacific, North American, and Juan de Fuca tectonic plates, would be much more affects by things that occur on the other edges of those plates, which would be Japan, China, ring of fire places. Virginia is pretty much in the middle of the North American plate. The boundary is halfway between the east coast and Europe.

I was reading online yesterday that it's very typical for earthquakes on the east coast to be felt over a much broader region than on the west coast. They did not give a reason why, but I would imagine it has to do with the type of rock on the east coast being more efficient at transmitting energy through it, therefore the energy travels further from the source. I'm not positive though....

Not to thread jack but any east coasters here about the mediocre central CA quake we had this morning? I didnt feel it but wondering what this means in terms of upcoming events.

Saw an article about the ring of fire and how if it keeps going clockwise people here on the west coast should expect something bad. Wonder what this quake means for us. Hopefully it decided to skip us and it'll keep going around the ring
