It means the fault moved in this sort of direction

There are hundreds of big faults on the east coast. Most of them are not active though. They are there from when the Appalachian mountains were formed.

Things don't like to be high up, they like to have no potential energy at all. When you build up a mountain range, it eventually collapses (by spreading out) over hundred of millions of years because there is no force to keep pushing it up. That's likely what has happened here. It probably won't hapen again on this scale (except for the afterhsocks during the next few days) for thousands of more years.

Yeah, it will be ridiculously overhyped.

During the devastating 6.9 Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, the media proclaimed the "The Bay Bridge has Collapsed!" This is the roughly 6-mile long comnbination suspension and girder apsn that goes from Oakland to SF, and is travelled by millions of people.

The vision they created with those words was that a six-mile long bridge had completely collapsed into the Bay, taking a few thousand commuters with it.

The reality: the attachments at one end of one short section of upper deck broke, causing that ~300 ft piece of deck to hinge down onto the lower deck. I cannot remember the details, but fewer than 10 people were affected.

So whatever you hear on the news today, reduce it by about 1000 times.

I'm completely guessing on this particular event, but an event of this size typically would be attributed to a movement of less than a couple of feet along a fault line.

For reference, the big quake in Sumatra in 2006 was due to 6 feet of fault movement.
