    It likely originated in one weak layer, but then cut up across other layers as the movement needed to be accommodated.

    *picks nicnac* Yes, this is all technically in the "crust", right above the "mantle"

    They are attracted to one another due to the polarity of ferrous-iron molecules, but that's not really a geology question.

    Theoretically speaking, as long as earthquakes happen, it relieves the pressure so big ones don't happen as often.
