    Just the basics
I have done a lot of research and there was someone working on a tent for a tonneau. Don't remember who it was now. Just get a flippac!

I have slept under my undercover tonneau in the open position. It is good and gets you off the ground. Now I have the flippac and it is awesome!

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
I have roof rack on the shell so all the knicknacks stay there. Plus with that setup when kids get tired you can pull at truckstop and get good sleep.
Also beach sleeping is nice, no worry about wind or over spray. Plus nothing in the morning to fold and pack. Just toss kids to car seats, hand out fruit bars and cup with milk and you are on your way. :D

I'm not much on the flippac design
-I would have to get a closer pic of the support bars that sit on the hood. It looks like they could scrape things up or bend stuff.
-For offroading I think a camper shell is probably a bad idea?

    with the vanagon top...
I don't mind a little ingenuity, but the NW can be a really wet place to camp, and I am not happy when my sleeping environment gets compromised. I've been in Boy Scouts with tents with 6" deep moats inside. This is one area where I respect that I may need to pay more to keep dry, so I'll go with a completed solution.
Still, that is a pretty awesome idea and I'd totally buy it.

Haha thanks. They have grown on me. The previous owner put them on in place of the SR5 steelies. I still wanna replace them with some sequoia/tundra limited 17's though :D

The second pic is more like "day camping" on the beach when we were fishing. The first pic was our actual campsite off the beach. None the less the pop-up tent is great, I'm glad I bought one.

I like the concept but I'm not really fond of the look myself. If I camped a lot, I might consider one, but I don't. I'm also thinking anyone who's contemplating sleeping under his Tonneau doesn't camp alot either. :D

Yeah, it looks nice but that couple hasn't been on in 2 years. Either the patent buried them or they moved on. My aunt is a master of the sewing machine (makes Carhart style coat knockoffs, wedding dresses, and leather jackets for bike gangs) so it's something I might be able to make happen... but I wonder if would just be a better idea to go with a bestop, lol.

Not enough to have a permanent camper like that.

I just said Tonneau because it doesn't interfere with offroading (I guess having a camper is kind of like having a 4Runner so that's a weak argument :p), would get me off the ground, instant setup, one of the more inexpensive solutions, and a hard cover solution is kind of nice for places like bear country and doubles for bed security.

I knew a guy who had a 91 Accord. Setting up camp involved folding down the rear seat.

I hope to one day go along the Oregon backcountry discovery route. it would be a new tent site each night, so you aren't saving anything with a separate tent. It's about same difference. At this point I have a personal tent and it works fine, but using the bed of the truck sounds beneficial.

In yellowstone you get fined if your camp doesn't have hard sides

You can't really common sense a piece of ill-suited or defective equipment. The boy scout tent was a billion years old and in true scout fashion, you are stuck with what they give you. We did our best but the roof sagged, wasn't waterproof, and had some nice leaks in the corners

Yes it is an M416 trailer. I bought mine a couple of years ago and have been re-doing it since then. I found this guy that collects military surplus and had this one and a few more about and hour NE of Fort Worth. I still would like to add a fresh water tank, batteries, and hot water heater. I need to extend the tongue a foot or 2 as well. These can be found in many different conditions ranging from $250-1G. There is also the Canadian version, 101cdn, that can still be purchased NEW OLD STOCK for $500-1G. Look through the "Trailer Tech" forum on http://forum.ih8mud.com/ and you will see several of these two types as well as many home built being modded out. They'll go any where your Tacoma can pull them. You'll even find them on Craigslist for dirt cheap if you look hard and long enough. You can see my half ass build thread here http://forum.ih8mud.com/trailer-tech/308368-kilos-slow-build.html.
