in his defense, thats un walled, with 1 8 and 1 amp hitting a 151 which im sure would scare me too.

isnt the rule of thumb something like every 3 dbs is twice as loud? i just remember reading something like that...

You need double the cone area or double the power to get a 3db increase. And I believe 10db is perceived to be twice as loud.

Correct. 3db is generally accepted as "noticeably" louder, AKA, we humans can hear a noticeable difference in volume. 10db is considered "twice as loud" in our perception.

In reality, volume in DB is not linear hence the (") above.

I had a CRX with 2 x 10's in High School. It was Loud as hell, but no where near the 161 above. It was around 140 db if i remember correctly.

I just finished putting 1 of the 10's from my CRX in the taco. It might be 10+ years old, but it still works great and sounds amazing in the taco.

i have a question that i'm hoping for some serious input with...and i'm hopin people with at least minimal knowledge w/ car audio will help me out.

Issue: I'm debating subs for my reg. cab and this is what is has come down to...
Rockford Fosgate P3 shallow 12" in a custom ported box...
OR... the JL Audio 13" TW-5 in a sealed box with .80 cubic feet.

now obviously the TW-5 will be better compared to the RF in the standard sealed box... but what if the RF p3shallow was in maximum spec'ed ported box vs. the TW-5
reason being is the price will be almost the same either way...

any impute would be greatly appreciated!

TW5's SQ is better. Dunno how your gonna work out a ported box w/ the P3. it should fit, but you might have some space issues if your taller. The mounting depth for the JL is about an inch shallower than the P3 fyi. p3 w/ a ported box would, however, be louder.

I don't even think it will be a close comparison. I think the JL will kick it in the face.
