I found this while looking for toolboxes. Looks pretty narrow but not sure if it would fit your needs.

I haven't seen what I'm looking for yet on this thread. I'm a new DC SB owner looking for a very low profile locking box that would sit just to the front of the wheel wells. It would be about the same height and allow 4X8 sheets to be carried on top with the wheel wells. My alternative would be anything short enough to continue to use the back rail. I'm just looking to get some of the stuff from behind and under my back seat... as George Carlin said... "when you get a bigger place, you get more sh*t!"

Another reason for the lower profile is to possibly mount a bike hub lock to carry my road bike around.

Let me clarify after actually measuring my new Tacoma. I would strongly consider the following box: 42"W (would fit inside wheel wells), 12 to 24" deep (wheel wells run about 26" deep), and 8"H (would match the height of the wheel wells). This big flat box would provide a lot of tool storage except for large items over 8" thick. As an alternative 42"Wx12"Dx18"H (something lower than the rail).

    Look at build!
Good ole tractor supply box that came in mine when i got it. Added some lights, Hi-Lift, cb antenna and a extra box under the toolbox for recovery stuff and then bed lined it all.

A little bit ghetto and not very secure. . . but it gets the job done. No one has stolen my tools so far, perhaps because it doesn't look like much worth stealing.

bought this tool box from Lowe's the other day. Mounted it using the trac system. Used Grip rite mounting system, found it right next to the truck tool boxes. The pics of how I mounted it are a little dark. I used some washers in the trac and the bolts that came with the Grip rite system...also had to use some washers/spacer because the bolt was too long and I didn't want to cut it (lazy and also in case I wanted to return it).

thanks guys. that Grip rite or Grip tite (whatever it is they sell at lowes) makes mounting any tool box super simple. The only negative is that if someone really wanted to steal your tool box they could with a simple hex nut driver. if you can see in my pic (which is dark i know) the bolt that goes into my trac system sticks out super far which makes it super hard to get a hex driver in that spot.

but, I figure if someone really wants to steal it, they're gonna steal it. locks only keep an honest person out. plus, kobalt tool boxes are kinda cheap in my opinion (that's why i bought it). i think a crow bar could solve any kobalt lock problem.

they must have JUST started making the slim tool box in black. mine has a made in October date on it. And I know that even a few months ago I couldn't find one in black. If you go to Lowes website you can find them. (even the full size) But I got lucky and the store down the street had one.

and yes, they are Super Light! I didn't even use a cart to carry it in Lowes. I just picked it up and carried it to the checkout counter. That's not bragging, they're seriously light compared to my old truck tool box in my Ford Ranger.
